We had more rain this week, and a summer storm arrived last night. Many of our tree branches were blown down, but just west of us, significant winds caused damage to local farms and crops. We are thankful for the weather alerts that let us know stormy weather is on its way.
I was happy to have visitors this week. My neighbor, Sheryl Smyser, and our pastor, Rev. Dan Brothers, both stopped by for a nice visit. I received a lovely card and note from Phil Begley. Phil worked for me almost 50 years ago, and he included a newspaper clipping of our office opening in Quincy in 1976!. During his career, Phil worked in Health Care, including time at Hannibal Regional Hospital. He has stayed in touch over the years, and I was glad to remember those happy times.
South Union Baptist Church gathered Sunday morning, and several were added to the prayer list, including Willie O’Brien and Nolen Leach.
It’s Back to School Time. Many area schools have lists of school supplies for children to bring. I remember that my mother would take us to the Maywood Store, and we would get a Big Chief Tablet, a box of crayons, and some pencils. We did not need a lunch box because Maywood School had a wonderful hot lunch each day. Mrs. Bradshaw made homemade yeast rolls almost everyday, and when I was in the younger grades, I got to go to the kitchen before lunch, sit on a stool, and I would get the first yeast roll! My parents always made sure my brothers, sister, and I had new shoes for school each year. We travelled to Quincy to a children’s shoe store on State Street to buy the shoes. I know we were very lucky to have new shoes, as some children attended school barefoot.
Rachel and Elijah Shepherd attended an end of season baseball party for Elijah’s baseball team on Saturday. The party was held at Iron Gate Estates outside of Palmyra. The boys enjoyed pizza and soda and playing together again.
Happy 52nd anniversary to John and Chris Carter!
