School is back in session soon. Wishing everyone an exciting year.
This week will feature a City Engineer, Ex- County Road Commissioner and a Prominent Surveyor. H. C. Scheetz.
His father , F. B. Scheetz, was a respected school master and civil engineer in Philadelphia, Pa., where he was born and raised. In 1840 he came west and settled in Ralls county where his son, H.C. Scheetz, was born and when he was 2 years old the family moved to Marion County in 1842.
H.C. Scheetz’s public career began in 1868 when he was appointed deputy county surveyor, then reappointed by the Governor of the state as county surveyor, and was re-elected in 1892, upon the completion of which term he completed his tenth consecutive year of office.
He was then elected in 1902 as an engineer of the South River Levee District, keeping that post and actively supervised the work of construction until the project was finished three years later. Still holding that position he installed their new double rotary thirty-six-inch pumping plant at a cost of $25,000.
Our modern public sewer system was installed in 1906 or 07 under his direction and supervision and a year later an extensive survey made for increasing the capacity of the city water plant.
During his service as city engineer many important improvements were successfully carried out, notable the park curb system which the council adopted. He surveyed the proposed Interurban route between Hannibal and Philadelphia.
He was one of the most prominent citizens and possessed the respect and esteem from everyone that knew him . He was a member of the Sons of the Revolution.
