Attendees travel from across Northeast Missouri for hands-on training focused on open meetings and public records laws

EDINA, Mo. — A strong regional turnout filled the Knox County Community Center on Thursday, April 30, for a Missouri Sunshine Law training, with nearly 100 attendees gathering to learn more about open meetings and public records requirements.

Organizers said approximately 95 people signed in for the session, though actual attendance was likely higher. At one point, attendees lined up to get into the training as additional tables and chairs were brought in to accommodate the crowd.

The training was led by Jay Turner of the Missouri Attorney General’s Office and covered key requirements of Missouri’s Sunshine Law, including public records requests, open meetings and compliance issues commonly faced by public bodies, along with a component specifically geared for law enforcement.

Attendees included elected officials, record keepers, law enforcement and members of the public from across Northeast Missouri. Sign-in sheets showed representation from multiple counties and communities, with some participants traveling more than 150 miles round trip to attend.

Survey responses collected following the training indicated most attendees entered with limited or moderate knowledge of the Sunshine Law and left feeling more confident in their ability to comply with public records and open meetings requirements. Nearly all respondents said they would recommend the training and felt the time spent attending was worthwhile. Attendees also asked for the training to be held on an annual or bi-annual schedule.

Several attendees noted the value of practical examples and guidance on topics such as closed sessions, posting requirements and handling Sunshine requests. Many also expressed interest in attending similar training sessions in the future.

Turner remained after the session to answer individual questions, speaking one-on-one with attendees seeking additional clarification.

The training was hosted by the Missouri Sunshine Coalition, the Missouri Attorney General’s Office and the NEMOnews Media Group.

The Knox County Community Center provided an ideal setting for the event, with local volunteers assisting in setup, Jared’s Jams of Edina donating coffee service for the attendees.

Planning of the event was organized by the NEMOnews Media Group and funding for the location was provided by the Missouri Sunshine Coalition.

The turnout and engagement reflected a growing interest in transparency and compliance across the region.
