Palmyra Man Injured, Son Killed in Iowa Train Crash
A 14-year-old passenger was killed and a Palmyra man was injured June 3 in a crash involving a truck and train in Iowa, according to an Iowa State Patrol crash report.
The crash occurred at 12:35 p.m. on Highway 21 at Old 6.
According to the report, a 2015 Kenworth driven by Michael Orton, 38, of Palmyra, was southbound on Highway 21 when the vehicle failed to yield
at a railroad crossing and was struck by a westbound Iowa Interstate train.
Robert Orton, 14, identified in the report as the driver’s son, was a passenger in the Kenworth and was pronounced dead at the scene. He was
transported to the State Medical Examiner’s Office.
Michael Orton was injured and transported by AirCare to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
The report said the train’s conductor and engineer were taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.
The Kenworth was towed by BJS Towing.
The motor carrier was listed as Sydenstricker Nobbe of Mexico, Missouri. No hazardous materials were involved, according to the report.
The crash remains under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol.
The Poweshiek County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa County Sheriff’s Office and Iowa Department of Transportation assisted at the scene.
