The citizens of Palmyra want a tower clock in the new court house and an
overwhelming percentage of them believe that it is right and proper for the city to make
a substantial appropriation for the purpose.
This morning amid a profusion of roses and ferns, was celebrated a beautiful home
wedding, that of Mr. Robert Brantson, St. Louis and Miss Frances Dixie Penn of this city.
Rev. Geo. Warren of Huntsville united in life these two happy hearts, using the
impressive ring ceremony.
About five o’clock Saturday afternoon, the oil house at the Junction, just south of the
station building, was discovered on fire. The flames spread so rapidly that they could
not be checked and everything in the building, consisting of stoves, signal oil, switch
lamps, etc., was consumed. The origin of the fire is not certainly known, but it is thought
that boys at play in the building were responsible for it.
It was discovered Monday that there were two cases of smallpox in Palmyra and one at
the farm of Jhn N Schols, operated by Wm. Wendening, in the West Ely neighborhood.
Miss Lena Coons, who has been teaching music in Canton, has returned to Palmyra for
this summer.

The announcement of the marriage of Lloyd W. Moore and Miss Marian Saffarrans on the twenty-eighth of last month came as a surprise to many friends when it was made public Monday morning. The young couple slipped away from their friends and drove to Mt. Sterling, Illinois, where they were quietly married.
The American Legion Auxiliary will produce a pageant, “The Passing of the Kings” in this city on the 20th of next month. The cast will be composed of 200 characters and the production will be quite spectacular.
Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Zoller and family and Mr. and Mrs. F.G. Bier and family entertained at the Bay De Charles Club on Thursday evening. Senator John Cook and family of Cody, Wyoming were guests.
Miss Louise Gottman returned to her studies in Quincy Monday after a visit with her parents, Mr.. and Mrs. Fred Gottman and family.
Dr. E.E. Harwell recently of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, has located in Palmyra for the practice of his profession, Osteopathy.
T.J. (Tucker) Powell, candidate for Judge of the County Court for the Western District, is a well known and highly respected farmer of Union township, who has a host of friends who would be greatly pleased to see him placed on the bench.
Miss Catherine Waller was the weekend guest of Miss Ruby Mae Rhoades in Palmyra.
W.L. Tuley and wife of Mt. Zion were the guests of Clifton Freeman and wife, Tuesday.

Miss Helen Bode has been chosen by Boots-Dickson Post, American Legion Auxiliary to
attend Girls State, which will be held July 21-27, at William Woods College in Fulton.
Miss Bode, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M.H. Bode, of Palmyra, will be a senior at Palmyra
High School in September.
Duane Freidank, U.S. Civil Engineer, of Lamar, Colorado, is spending a two weeks’
vacation with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C.E. Freidank, of this city.
Sam Martin, of Palmyra, was elected state representative, of Benton County, Monday, at
Missouri Boy’s State. Young Martin is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Waterson Martin.
Norwood Glendinning, young farmer living northwest of Palmyra, was saved from an
angry bull, last week, by an Eskimo Spitz dog.
John T. White, Palmyra businessman, suffered injuries to his head in a gas explosion at
his home early Friday morning. The mishap resulted from a leak in the gasoline.
Announcement of the approaching marriage of Miss Kay Lemon, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Lemon, to Stephen Dearing, son of Moss Dearing, was made at a bridge party Friday evening at the home of the bride-to-be.
Eight local Boy Scouts are attending camp at Oko-Tipi, south of Hannibal. Those who went from Palmyra are: Jack Lewis, Bob Lewis, Ralph Stuhlman, George Morrow Lewis, Edward Meyers, Charlie Schaeffer, Dannie Haydon, and Ben Glahn.

Thieves entered through the rear of Durand’s Drugs Tuesday night, June 15, 1976, and took an undetermined amount of controlled pharmaceutical products.
Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Foster and Mrs. Bertha Roland of Palmyra attended the wedding of their niece, Susan Foster, and David Cook at Collinsville, Illinois, June 12.
Mr. and Mrs. Arther Drebes, 402 W. Ross Street, are announcing the birth of a daughter at 4:16 a.m. on Friday, June 11, 1976 in Levering Hospital in Hannibal. She has been named Julie Dianne
Mrs. Dick (Freda) Elliott and her eight year old son, George were reported in satisfactory condition following injuries sustained in a one car accident approximately four miles west of Palmyra on route C.
Gerald (Butch) Herold won first this past weeked in the National Field Archers Association Mid-Western Sectional held at the Busch Wildlife Area near Weldon Springs.
Theron McCoy was dismissed Friday from St. Elizabeth’s Hospital where he was taken Thursday with a broken leg. He feel about 15 feet from a gasoline storage tank.

The Palmyra R-I School District is considering a bond issue to run on the April 2002 ballot, but it won’t cost the taxpayers any additional money. While a bond issue is strictly being discussed right now, Superintendent Jime Lowe said the school district has the ability to run a $2 million bond issue without raising the current tax levy of $3.33.
County employees who use either their personal or county-owned cell phones now have a new policy to follow. Upon the recommendation of the state auditor’s office, the county adopted a new cell phone policy, mainly because of the increase in use of cell phones by county employees. Under the new policy, if an employee uses their personal phone, the county will reimburse the employee for minutes used for county calls above the basic plan, provided they present the county with an itemized statement showing those calls.
A Palmyra teen is in custody in connection with an early Sunday morning convenience store burglary. Palmyra Police said the male youth was arrested Sunday afternoon and was awaiting arraignment Monday in Marion County Associate Circuit Court on a charge of second-degree burglary. He was being held in the Marion County Jail. Police said statements from the suspect led to the recovery of $601 in cash as well as two cartons of cigarettes.
The parents of Julie Anne Janes and Patrick M.J. Leach, both of Shawnee, Kansas, announce the engagement of their children. Janes is the daughter of Bud and Carol Janes, of Hannibal, and formerly of Palmyra. Leach is the son of Kathy Reel, Overland Park, Kansas.
Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Glascock of Jefferson City, Missouri (formerly of Philadelphia, Missouri) will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with a reception from 2 to 4 p.m.,
July 7, in the Philadelphia Baptist Church Fellowship Hall at Philadelphia. Mrs. Glascock is the daughter of the late Carl and Amy Schleiermacher. Mr. Glascock is the son of the late Frank and Marie Glascock.

Palmyra State Bank community room from 2 to 4 p.m
