125 Years Ago

July 10, 1901

J.H. Englehart died at his home in this city last Saturday morning. He had been in failing health for months and his death was not unexpected. A few months ago his wife died and since that time his health has grown rapidly worse. Some weeks ago he suffered a stroke of paralysis which ultimately caused his death. The funeral was held Monday afternoon.

Mrs. J. A. Kennedy and little daughter, Margery, leave tomorrow for a vist to Kentucky relatives.

Miss Kitty Johnson and Ora Phillips left yesterday for Seattle, Washington, where they will spend the summer.

Fourth of July was the hottest day of the year, so far. At a comparatively cool and shady place on his law, H. C. Scheetz’s thermometer registered 101, while down town the mercury ran up to 105.

Raymond, the little two year old son of C. W. Pennewell, fell from a fence on which he was playing Thursday and broke his right leg near his thigh.

Godfrey Lehenbauer is the proud father of a boy.

To reduce one’s weight, cut off one meal a day, breakfast preferably. Take a cup of clear coffee, sipping it slowly. Live largely on lean meat. Take plenty of exercise. Avoid sugars and starchy foods. – July Ladies Home Journal

Mr. George Gardner, who makes his home with his daughter, Mrs. John Smith of this city, was prostrated by heat last Thursday and fr a while his case was considered dangerous… B. F. Moore was overcome by heat in this city Friday while he was seated in Berghoefer Bros. Harness store, and for a while was very ill… Mrs. Nellie Ruffner, while at Spalding Springs Thursday was overcome by the excessive heat and but for the prompt services of a physician who happened to be there at the time it is probable she could not have recovered.

July 7, 1926

Mrs. Everett Bross and children arrived at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Bross Monday night for a visit.

Miss Guida Greening has returned home from a three-week visit with relatives in Kansas City and Paul’s Valley, Oklahoma.

Miss Catherine Waller, of Philadelphia, has been the recent guest of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Donelson, of east of this city.

A little daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Glen Todd in Hannibal last week. Mrs. Walter Todd of this city spent yesterday in Hannibal with them.

Miss Thelma Smith and Adam Bourne, of this city, were quietly married at the Grace Methodist church parsonage in Quincy last Wednesday afternoon at two o’clock, Rev. C. H. Thrall performing the ceremony.

Miss Annie Dunn, of Philadelphia, last Thursday gave a seven lot park in Philadelphia to this county. The donor specified that the park was to be for the use of the citizens of Marion count and especially those in the neighborhood of Philadelphia.

Elizabeth, the little six year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Schaeffer of this city, last Wednesday caught her hand in the wringer of an electric washing machine being used at her home. The hand was badly bruised and mashed, but no bones were broken and it is not thought that any serious injury to the member will result.

The heat of the past two weeks is still with us. Rains have threatened several times, but so far have passed us by. Yesterday we had little shower and for some time it gave promise of being a good rain, but the clouds soon broke away.

July 9, 1941

Jean Gottman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Gottman, received treatment at St. Elizabeth hospital in Hannibal, Monday. She returned to her home and is getting along satisfactorily.

Corporal Marvin Teel, son of Chief of Police and Mrs. John G. Teel, expects to visit his parents in Palmyra soon, according to word received from him by his father yesterday.

Mr. and Mrs. Lynn F. Feaster of Philadelphia are the parents of a daughter, born Thursday, July 3, at St. Elizabeth hospital in Hannibal.

Mrs. Francis Feaster, daughter, Marjorie, of Hannibal, have returned to their home after a visit to Mr. and Mrs. Sam Feaster and sons.

Ed Hoehne of St. Louis and Earl Hoehne of Wichita, Kansas, visited over the weekend with W. C. Hoehne and family.

Miss June House has returned to Kahoka following a visit here of several days with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Victor House who live west of Palmyra and her grandfather, H.H. House.

Private Richard B. who is stationed at Camp Robinson, Arkansas, is visiting his parents and other relatives here a few days of the latter part of the week.

Mrs. Ira Buckwalter and daughter, Martha, and Mrs. Russell Shade and sons, Lawrence, George, and Charles, spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Gibbon in Hannibal.

E. A. Fagan and daughter, Bettie Jane, were the guests Monday of Mr. and Mrs. Fagan in Palmyra.

July 14, 1976

It was a thrilling moment when Stacy Hillebrennen, Miss Palmyra 1976, was named fourth runner-up Saturday night in the Miss Missouri Pageant held in Mexico July 8, 9, and 10.

Mr. and Mrs. Kaden, Route 2, Palmyra, are announcing the birth of a daughter at 11:23 a.m. on Monday, July 5, 1976, at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Hannibal. Kelly Ann weighed 8 pounds, 3 ounces. The Kadens are also the parents of two sons, Michael, 11, and Larry, 6.

Mr. and Mrs. Mike Blickhan of Taylor entertained with a supper at their home Saturday evening, July 10, to celebrate the second birthday of their daughter, Lora Lee.

Seventy-five relatives and friends enjoyed a basket dinner July 4 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Redmon and Roy.

Mr. and Mrs. Tony Lenzini returned July 6 from a month’s vacation in Europe.

Mrs. Frank Dodd has just returned from a month’s vacation in South Dakota. She visited her sister, Mrs. Charlotte Hufteling, in Redfield and also attended the 50th Bicentennial class reunion of Ashland High School.

Palmyra TOPS Chapter 589 ended the month of June with a total of 36 and one-half pounds lost. Mrs. Edith Latimer was queen of the week and also was awarded a ribbon for losing the most weight during the month of June.

In activities at the Hannibal Tom Sawyer Days, Diana Vannice placed first in the junior fiddling contest and was third in the costume contest. Greg Vannice was first in the costume contest and placed third in the talent contest. They are the children of Mr. and Mrs. Alton Vannice.

A newly formed telecommunications group wants to build a 300-foot cellular phone tower on city property in Palmyra. Michael McCabe, vice president for engineering for TMP Corporation, asked to lease a portion of the city’s water treatment facility grounds at the north end of the city for the site of the tower.

One favorite event for the Marion County Fair (Formerly the Palmyra Festival) is back and another is making a change. The Ugly Truck contest will again be held in conjunction with the fair, while the baby contest will feature a new event.

The City of Palmyra is looking at its electrical power supply options after receiving an offer from right here at home. A formal proposal from Northeast Missouri Electrical Power Cooperative and Missouri Rural Electric for a long-term electrical supply contract.

Mr. and Mrs. J.B. (Addie Jean) Mette were married on June 23, 2001, at their new home in O’Fallon, Missouri. The bride is the daughter of Wesley Schwartz, St. Louis, and Teresa Gipson, Hermann, Missouri. The groom is the son of Eldon and Kay Mette, Palmyra.

Russel and Lela Tomlinson, Palmyra, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house on July 14.  Mrs. Lela (Ross) Tomlinson is the daughter of the late John and Lottie Ross. Mr. Tomlinson is the son of the late Cecil and Essie Tomlinson.

Don and Corinne Wagner, Albuquerque, New Mexico, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on April 15th. The former Corinne Banks, daughter of the Late Cory and Lynn Banks, Palmyra, formerly of Emerson and Donald Wagner, son of Gertrude Crook, Hannibal and formerly of Monroe City, and the late Edward Wagner, Philadelphia, met during the summer of 1950 in the local drug store.
