Palmyra’s building inspector/code enforcer is hoping to head off problems with a springtime reminder about codes and permit requirements.
“People don’t get permits, because they don’t know they need to many times,” said Chuck Anderson, who serves as part-time building inspector and code enforcer for the city of Palmyra.
Anderson said permits are required when installing:
• roofing
• porches
• fences
• decks
• driveways
• sidewalks
• pools over 24 inches deep
• mobile home pads
• moving of buildings
• sheds or storage buildings up to and including 12-feet by 12-feet.
Anderson said he will be busy this spring enforcing the following codes prohibiting;
• grass/weeds exceeding 10 inches in height
• unlicensed vehicles on property unless garaged
• use of indoor furniture for outdoor furniture
• tires on outside of house/garage
• appliances outside
• porches used for storage
• old, dilapidated sheds/garages in need of repair or demolished
• accumulation of rubbish, garbage, junk and debris on front, side or rear of property
• trash cans left by the curb
• pools taller than 24 inches and shorter than 48 inches not fenced in
• animal waste not disposed of in a sanitary manner.
He also noted that residences are not considered habitable if they are not connected to water, sewer and electricity and all houses/buildings must have address numbers (3.5 inches tall) on the front.
Permits can be obtained at city hall.
