After a pair of dominant home wins, the Palmyra Panthers looked to carry their momentum into Friday night’s showdown against a formidable North Callaway team. With an electric crowd of orange and black cheering them on, the Panthers engaged in a hard-fought contest that saw North Callaway edge out an 18-12 victory in a game that remained close from start to finish.
The Panthers came out strong in the first quarter, securing an early lead of 6-0. However, North Callaway would respond before halftime, going ahead 12-6 as both teams showed their defensive grit.
Palmyra’s offensive standouts included quarterback Rylan Compton, who completed 7 of 18 passes for 101 yards, including a touchdown, though he also threw one interception. Despite facing a tough Thunderbird defense, Compton managed to find his targets consistently when it mattered most. Landon Carroll emerged as Palmyra’s workhorse in the backfield, carrying the ball 20 times for 140 yards and scoring on an impressive 80- yard sprint to the end zone. His ability to find holes and break away showcased his talent as one of the team’s most dynamic players. In the receiving game, Tyler Spicknall led the way with one spectacular 50-yard reception that resulted in a touchdown. His big play electrified the Palmyra offense and brought the crowd to its feet. Pierce White was another reliable option, hauling in four receptions for 22 yards.
The Panthers compiled 228 yards of total offense, complemented by 43 yards in kickoff returns, bringing their overall yardage to 271. The balance of Palmyra’s attack demonstrated a versatile approach, even as they came up short on the scoreboard.
The Palmyra defense put up a valiant effort against North Callaway. Tyler Spicknall was a force on both sides of the ball, leading the team with 7.5 tackles and breaking up two passes. His all-around performance stood out as he made plays from start to finish. Laden Simmons and Henley Snow also made their presence felt, each recording 6.5 tackles and contributing to the Panthers’ relentless pursuit of the ball. Carroll showed his two-way capabilities by adding 5.5 tackles on defense, while Cayden Ridout and Grayson Miller provided crucial support with 5 and 3.5 tackles respectively. The Panthers’ defense totaled 47 tackles and was active in disrupting North Callaway’s passing game, evidenced by three total pass breakups, two from Spicknall and one from JT Thomas.
Palmyra was flagged four times for a total of 30 yards in penalties, which included an intentional grounding call, a false start, a roughing the kicker, and an encroachment penalty. These setbacks proved costly in such a closely contested game. On special teams, Rylan Compton handled the punting duties, delivering 4 punts for a combined 102 yards, while he also kicked off three times for 62 yards. In kickoff returns, JT Thomas shone with two returns totaling 42 yards, providing the Panthers with valuable field position.
North Callaway countered with a balanced offensive attack, passing for 108 yards and rushing for 140 yards over 41 carries. Their three touchdowns were the difference, despite being penalized eight times for 70 yards, which included multiple false starts, a kickoff out of bounds, and defensive infractions.
The Palmyra Panthers, now 3-2 on the season, will look to bounce back next Friday, October 4th, as they hit the road to face CCC rival Monroe City (3-2) with the Mayor’s Cup on the line. This highly anticipated matchup is set for 7 p.m., and the Panthers will aim to reclaim their winning form against a strong opponent.
