PALMYRA, Mo. — The Marion County Commission addressed a range of county business during its regular sessions on April 7 and April 14, including approving a construction bid for a building renovation, hearing departmental updates, and authorizing holiday events at the courthouse.
Renovation at 800 Broadway Approved
At the April 7 meeting, the Commission approved a $59,100 bid from D&S Construction for renovation work at 800 Broadway. The project includes installation of a drop ceiling, interior framing, electrical work, drywall, insulation, painting, a bathroom, doors, chair rail, a closet, and an information technology wall. The bid was the only one submitted and was approved unanimously on a motion by Eastern District Commissioner Larry Welch and seconded by Western District Commissioner Lacey Miller.
Financial Approvals and Office Fees
Commissioners reviewed and approved various financial claims against the county, as well as payroll for the period of March 16 through March 29. Fees for March were also approved for multiple county offices.
Palmyra Christmas Committee Receives Support
On April 14, Ron Kraft of the Palmyra Christmas Committee presented plans to reinvigorate holiday celebrations in Palmyra. The committee requested permission to use the Marion County Courthouse for a Santa Claus event and the lighting of a Christmas tree during the Thanksgiving weekend. Plans also include a live nativity scene and fire truck rides. Commissioner Welch inquired about liability insurance, and Kraft said he would follow up with the committee. The Commission granted conditional approval for the committee to proceed with planning.
Sheriff’s Department Updates
Sheriff Jimmy Shinn reported that the jail’s holding cell renovation is nearly complete, with only window tinting remaining to prevent inmates from seeing into the dispatch area. He also informed the Commission that a squad car was rear-ended and is awaiting repairs at Bud’s Paint and Body Shop.
Additionally, the sheriff noted the lack of air conditioning in administrative offices, restrooms, and the kitchen. The current HVAC unit, installed in 1993, is under review by Peters Heating and Air Conditioning.
Planning and Zoning, Highway Staffing
Angela Agnew, secretary to the County Coordinator, presented a planning and zoning request from resident Isaac Rodriguez for a special use minor variance. The variance, related to a setback requirement greater than 15 feet, was approved unanimously by the Commission.
Agnew also reported that MODOT approved placement of Purple Heart signs and that denial letters for the county’s senior tax relief program had been reviewed.
Highway Supervisor Mike Schaefer requested permission to hire a new employee in preparation for four anticipated retirements in his department. The Commission granted the request.
Sales Tax and Financial Outlook
County Clerk Marla Meyers reported that sales tax revenues and fund balances for March remain healthy. The Commission indicated it will continue to monitor financial metrics in the coming months.
Next Meeting
The Marion County Commission is scheduled to reconvene at 9:30 a.m. Monday, April 21.
