Maywood News
We had another rainy week, and the temperatures ranged from hot and humid early in the week to chilly this morning. Although today was the first day of summer, it rained most of the day, and the sun never made an appearance!
South Union Baptist Church met for worship today, and Brother Dan’s message was “Celebrating Fathers” from Genesis 18:19. Luke accompanied the congregation for “Would You Bless Our Homes and Families,” and the children distributed cards and small gifts to the
men for Father’s Day recognition. Brother Dan had mentioned two previous Sundays that he hoped the men would receive chainsaws, so the men received chainsaw keychains along with candy and a card! Following the offering, the congregation sang an impromptu version of “Showers of Blessings” to celebrate the ongoing rainfall! The Sunday School children enjoyed glazed donuts and learned about Hannah, the mother of Samuel, while they made Father’s Day cards. Next week, the church will host a free fellowship lunch and meeting after the service on June 28th! All are welcome!
I was sorry to learn of the death of Reverend Steve Barker, who lived on Highway P in
Maywood. Rev. Barker served as the pastor of First Christian Church in Hannibal for many years and was a cheerful, loving presence in the community. Sympathy is extended to his wife Linda and their children and other family members.
Rev. Barker’s grandson, Nolyn Richards, was a tremendous help to Luke and me last week when we were mowing at the Fabius Community Center. He very graciously allowed us to borrow his zero-turn lawn mower to finish the yard. Luke, who is 13, was overjoyed to drive the mower, and I got early practice in saying, “Slow down,” which is a phrase I think I will be
repeating in a couple of years when he has his driver’s permit!
Chuck and Becky Jones recently returned from an anniversary trip to Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. While traveling, they enjoyed time at Dollywood and took a scenic drive in the Smokey Mountains. They also attended the Hatfield and McCoy Dinner Show at Pigeon Forge and visited the National Quilt Museum in Paducah, Kentucky!
Happy Birthday to Rebeccah Jones on June 23rd.
