Maywood News

We had quite a bit of rain again this week, and some of the mornings were almost
chilly! However, Sunday afternoon’s temperature exceeded 90 degrees, and the air felt like a sponge! Summer has definitely arrived!
South Union Baptist Church gathered for worship today, and Brother Dan’s message
was “Faith and Trials on the Mountain” from James 2:23-24. The Bible passage referred to Abraham being God’s friend, so the congregation sang several hymns about God being our friend. Luke accompanied the congregation for “What a Friend We have in Jesus,” and he also played the offertory. In Sunday School, the children learned about the call of Samuel; and they helped Deb O’Bryan and Mavoureen Meyer prepare for the fellowship lunch, which involved some taste-testing of the brownies! Next week, the church will celebrate Communion long with having a patriotic service. All are welcome!
I was sorry to learn of the death of John Yancey, who was in public service in Marion County for many years. John previously served as Circuit Court Clerk in Palmyra and had also been the Mayor of Hannibal. His late wife, Temple, had been a wonderful storyteller and shared her talents with the Maywood Sunday School and Bible School children years ago. John is survived by three children and several grandchildren.
Several area youth attended the National Junior High Finals Rodeo in Guthrie, Oklahoma this past week. Mavoureen Meyer’s grandchildren were at the event, which included more than 1,500 campers and many horse stalls in temporary tents. Several tornado warnings were issued for the area, and the campers and horses were evacuated to the arena in the middle of the night while facing high winds!
Thankfully, no one was seriously injured.
Jacob and I attended the Oak Hill Community Center music night in Ralls County on Saturday evening. We enjoyed a wonderful carry-in meal, which included freshly-picked green beans; and the music included some gospel and country favorites. The building formerly served as a one-room school, and area residents have worked over the years to preserve it as a community center.
Jacob sang a solo chorus of “Will the Circle Be Unbroken?” and later commented that he missed his brothers singing with him!
