Man charged in connection with Palmyra woman’s murder

A man was arrested Saturday in connection with the death of a 34 year old Palmyra woman Friday morning.

Raymond Gum
According to Palmyra Police Chief Eddie Bogue, Raymond D. Gum Jr., was arrested in Petersberg, Ill. by deputies from the Menard County (Ill.) Sheriff’s Department the U.S. Marshal Service and other agencies at approximately 12:23 p.m., following a 24-hour manhunt.
Gum, who is currently in custody in Menard County, Ill., is being charged with first degree murder and armed criminal action. Bond has been set at $1 million, cash only.

Members of local law enforcement organizations including Palmyra Police, Marion County Sheriffs Office and Missouri Highway Patrol confer during an investigation of a suspicious death in the 100 block of E. Jefferson Street. Further details were not made available in time to make this edition. A man was later arrested in Illinois for the murder of a 34-year-old woman at the location.
Palmyra Police were called for a medical call at 10:59 a.m., on Friday, Sept. 3, in the 100 block of East Jefferson Street where the body of 34-year-old Crystal Cooper was found inside a parked vehicle.
A death investigation was initiated also involving members of the Marion County Sheriff’s Department and Missouri State High Patrol.
Authorities subsequently began to search for the suspect who was believed to be armed and dangerous and in the Springfield, Ill. area, and was last seen in an older model silver Buick LeSabre.
Gum was expected to waive extradition to Missouri Tuesday.
