To thank the women who have given their love and support to departed comrades, the Palmyra VFW Post 11041 and Palmyra American Legion Post 174 will be holding an Honor Luncheon for them.
The luncheon, consisting of soup and sandwich, will be held on Saturday, Nov. 18, at the American Legion Hall, 600 Short St., in Palmyra.
According to Jeff Mehling, the idea for the luncheon was initiated by a VFW member.
“We looked into the possibility and it evolved into checking for names and we came up with quite a few,” said Mehling, noting Brad Thurman at Lewis Brothers Funeral Chapel was instrumental in helping them find names. “We then got the Legion and Legion Auxiliary involved since we are all three are in the business of helping veterans.”
Recognizing those who helped care, love and supported veterans is the main purpose of the event, Mehling said.
“We would like to show them the credit they deserve for all the devotion they have shown over the years,” he said, noting it does not matter if these women are part of the VFW or American Legion. “This is a chance to honor them for their service.
In addition to the luncheon, a prayer and speech by Judge Rachel Bringer Shepherd will be heard, and a social time will be included.
“These women are of different ages, and I’m sure some of them don’t get out very often,” Mehling said. “This is an opportunity for them to do that and visit with others.”
Women whose names the VFW and Legion have found will be getting an invitation to the event, Mehling said, noting the invitation is for Palmyra, Philadelphia and Taylor area women. They may bring a guest of their choice.
He noted that if someone is a widow of a serviceman and did not receive an invitation, to contact, Ken Brummett 573-439-5748 or Marcia Fohey, 574-406-3188.
Brummett and Marcia are also the contacts to RSVP by Oct. 31 and for additional information.
