Larry W.  O’Brien

Larry W. O’Brien, 77, of Palmyra, Mo., passed away at 6:34 p.m. Sunday, May 26, 2024, at his home in Palmyra.

A graveside service with full military honors performed by Boots-Dickson Post #174 of the American Legion was held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday June 4, 2024, at Greenwood Cemetery in Palmyra. Rev. Mark Carpenter officiated.

Friends and family were invited to Larry’s Life Celebration at a visitation that was held from 9:30 am to 11:00 a.m. at Lewis Brothers Funeral Chapel in Palmyra.

Larry was born October 18, 1946, in Hannibal, Mo., to Chester and Darlene Dennison O’Brien. He was married to Dorothy Stewart on July 20, 1968, in Palmyra. She preceded him in death on December 5, 2011.

Other survivors include his children Bill O’Brien (Pam), Christine O’Brien, David O’Brien ( Leslie), and Tracy Bock (Joey) all of Palmyra; grandchildren Sam O’Brien, A.J. O’Brien, Austin (Hattie) O’Brien, Cameron O’Brien, and Alex O’Brien; great-grandchildren Reece, Bentlee, and Raven O’Brien; sisters Kathy Webb (Doug) of Minnesota, and Jill Englehardt (Larry) of Palmyra.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, wife of 43 years Dorothy O’Brien, and brother George O’Brien.

A lifelong farmer, Larry loved the sweet smell of the country, planting and harvesting crops, a task that often felt never ending but something he did with a smile to provide for his family. On the farm they raised cattle and pigs and Larry was quick to teach his kids and grandkids to care for the livestock, taking them to their FFA and 4H shows, carrying on the traditions and values his parents taught him. He enjoyed having and working on International Harvester Tractors, no green tractors to be seen on his farm! His family was his greatest joy and he always found time to spend with them, heading to town to watch their games and events at school, taking in a Mizzou game or watching the Chiefs and Cardinals play. Occasionally he liked to go to the boat and play the slots, fishing in a local spot, or just hanging out at home watching Bonanza or Andy Griffith on T.V. A favorite past time was having a meal with his grandchildren at Country Kitchen. His charming smile, loving heart, and even his occasional onery side will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved him.
