MAY 13, 1925
County Court Monday increased the tax rate in Marion county five cents on the $100. This was made necessary by increased running expenses. The State rate has been increased one cent and as the County rate will be 30 instead of 25 cents, the tax payer will find his tax bill some what higher next fall.
The following directors were elected to serve for the ensuring year on the newly formed Peoples’ Mill and Distribution Company: H.A. Yeager, John A. Dearing, Geo. E. Schaffer, Chas. Isenberg, Ed. Disslehorst, J.W. Head, John C. Hansbrough.
County Court has acted favorably on the recent claim filed by Prosecute attorney Roy Hamlin for $2,000 for back salary, and warrant for the money will be given him in a short time.
J.A. Dearing was elected manager of the Peoples’ Mill and Distributing Co. The mill will be opened May 25th, and will be fully prepared to handle the new wheat crop.
Mrs. B.F. Glahn entertained with a bridge luncheon Saturday, honoring her charming young daughter, Miss Frances. Guests were Mrs. J.H. Robinson, Mrs. A.W. Mackey, Mrs. L.D. Ash, Mrs. Jennie Doherty, Mrs. W.L. Owsley, Mrs. O.T. Coleman, Mrs. W.H. Potter, Mrs. F.G. Carlsbad, Mrs. Lucy Moore, Mrs. Nellie Glahn, Mrs. M.J. Glahn, Mrs. W.H. Tuley, Mrs. W.T. Tuley, Mrs. D.H. Sosey, Mrs. F.H. Sosey, Miss Mille Rush, Miss Helen Morrow, Miss Ruby Petty, Miss Sarah Russell, Miss Julie Russell, Miss Edna Drescher, Miss Bertha Drescher, Miss Leona Harding and Miss Mildred Harding.
C.E. Leggett’s new drug store in the old Saving’s Bank building is now open. The interior has been neatly decorated, handsome fixtures installed and the store presents an attractive appearance. A modern soda water fountain is one of the features.
The closing exercises of our schools this week have brought forcibly to mind the urgent need in Palmyra of a Public Building with an auditorium large enough to hold all the people who desire to attend the various entertainments given here.
Miss Berniece Riegel of Palmyra was one of the four young ladies selected by Flo Ziefield, nationally known as a judge of feminine beauty, to serve as Beauty Queen for the Ragout, the Yearbook of Central and Howard-Payne Colleges, Fayette, Missouri.
Commencement week for Rensselaer High school opened Sunday. The graduates are Misses Elizabeth Parks, Marville Fleming, Agnes Hagan and Mssrs. Henry Feldcamp, Phillip Robertson, Henry Spenny and Lee Spotts.

Commencement exercises for the 39 graduating seniors of the Palmyra High school will be held tomorrow at the high school auditorium
Contributions have been pouring in during the past two weeks toward the fund needed for the building of the new bleachers at the softball field. It is estimated that 40 more $25 Certificates of Indebtedness will provide enough money to pay for the bleachers.
Charles Edward Fogle and Russell Fogle, Jr., sons of Mr. and Mrs. Russell F. Fogle of Palmyra, are candidates for graduating with the 1950 class at Iowa State University.
The Logan brothers, Gene and Jim, who have had the Massey Harris and New Holland farm implement agencies in Palmyra since the first of the year, are opening up a new Frigidaire appliance store next door to their former place of business on Main Street in Palmyra.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars have been decorating and remodeling their meeting hall in the basement of Sally’s Grill. Working in their spare time on rainy days and in the evenings, they group is putting in new plywood walls and new flooring.
Mike Begley, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Begley of near Palmyra, suffered a broken pelvis bone and right hip when accidentally struck by a truck last Thursday morning.
A raid conducted by the highway patrol Monday afternoon and evening resulted in the confiscation of a number of punchboards and bingo jars in business houses in Marion county and eleven of the operators pleaded guilty and paid fines and costs totaling $23.80 each.
Closing exercises for the 8th grade graduates of Lincoln school were held last night at the Park Baptist church. The five students receiving their certificates were William Johnson, Barbara Williams, Robert Mundy, Wayne Mahr and Charles Johnson.
Marion county led all other counties in the highway patrol troop B area in amount of property damage caused by auto accidents during the month of April. Even though Palmyra had only five accidents, damage was estimated to be $5,930. Of the 15 deaths caused by automobile accidents this year, Marion with a total of 5 has more than any other single county.
A miscellaneous shower was given Saturday night by Mrs. John Redd and Mrs. John Stone in honor of Miss Jacquelyn Stone, bride elect of Dale Redd.
Mildred Arend, Freda Richamond and Lynette Bohon all of Philadelphia high school won first and second place prizes in the Mahan speech contests for consolidated high schools.

Palmyra was isolated from the rest of the nation along with several other communities in this area last Friday when telephone service was interrupted by the cutting of a cable between Palmyra and Hannibal.
The new flood wall erected this spring by the City Council around the City Power House proved its usefulness last week during the sudden downpour which dropped some three inches of rain on Palmyra in matter of minutes. The flash flood set city crews to hastily installing the flood gates in the wall to prevent water from entering the plant.
Eight Palmyra Jaycees attended the State Jaycees Convention in St. Louis. They were Rich Donelson, Dennis Bremmer, Nik Yager, Roger Jones, Mike Hill, Darrell Harris, Gerald Smith and Randy Smith.
Mr. and Mrs. Richard Riney of Taylor are happy to announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Sally, to Jim Gottman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Chauncey Gottman of rural Palmyra.
Cindy Goodin was crowned queen at the Marion County R-II prom and Mike Brown king. Attendants were Kay Hultz, Dorothea Lake, Ernie Bock and Eddie Olson.
Palmyra R-I prom queen and king are Sandy Maddox and Rod Buckwalter. The court consists of Julie Logan, Doug Maddox, Jim Sutton, Suzanne Coovert, Bruce Foreman and Irene Hevel.
Rod Buckwalter was named the outstanding all-around athlete by the coaches at the Palmyra R-I athletic night. Jeff Funkenbsuch and Barbara Lake earned the Glen Murphy Memorial Sportsmanship Award. Other winners were Brent Lehenbauer, outstanding golfer; Jeff Funkenbusch, outstanding defensive back; John Durham, outstanding offensive lineman; Steve Bridgman, outstanding defensive lineman; John Hess, outstanding offensive back and most valuable football player; Barbara Lake outstanding defensive girls basketball player; Mary Ellen Gottman outstanding offensive player; Sandy Maddox and Laurie Gottman, outstanding pep squad members; John Durham, outstanding boys basketball defensive player; and Rod Buckwalter, outstanding offensive player.
Mike Clow, four-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Clow, was in Blessing Hospital several days last week for treatment of suspected food poisoning.

Ashley Spratt was named valedictorian and Kate Boling, salutatorian, during commencement exercises at Marion County R-II High School at which 19 seniors received their diplomas.
Several new people were hired during the Palmyra R-I board of education meeting, including Kendra Tieman, high school counselor; Addy Gottman, high school special education; and Alysha Pugh, high school business. Six candidates have been interviewed for the high school basketball position vacated by Brad Thompson, and Superintendent Jim Lowe said he is hopeful the positions will be filled soon.
Downtown Palmyra will be hoops central this Saturday when the Knights of Columbus host their three-on-three basketball tournament. More than 95 teams are expected this year, topping the number from last year.
Pat and Jim Drebenstedt celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary at an open house at the home of their daughter and son-in-law, Teresa and Ed Hays of Palmyra.
Four employees at Maple Lawn Nursing Home were honored for their service to the residents of the home. They are Marsha Riney, Nurse of the Year and Outstanding RN; Janet Taylor, Outstanding LPN; Desiree Parker, Outstanding LPN; and Beth Marquartte, Outstanding LPN.
Laura Lenzini and Brett Snyder have been selected to attend a week long Scholars Academy at Moberly Area Community College this summer.
Matt Thomas, a senior, and Caleb Sutter, a sophomore, advanced to the state golf tournament in Sedalia.
Ashley Pyle will be going for an unheard of fourth straight class 2A state championship in the 100 meters high hurdles this weekend, but that’s just part of the story. The Palmyra senior also qualified for three other events, the 300 meter low hurdles, the triple jump and the 1,600 meter relay team along with Hannah Glascock, Sarah Gottman and Adrienne Lemons. Bethany Riney also qualified for state in the high jump.
Five Panthers have qualified for the state track meeting, including Ryan Scholl in the 100 meter hurdles and the 400 meter relay team of Brad Carper, Brian Sutter, Anthony Huber and Zach Hess.
Marion County R-II students, Zac Garner and Justin Crouch, were among the 408 winners from 25 regional math contests held throughout the state.
