The Palmyra Chamber of Commerce met on Tuesday, May 13th at the 1839 Event Venue.
The meeting started with Chariton Valley offering a training seminar for Sexual Trafficking on May 28th at the Macon Expo Center. The training is free and comes with free breakfast and lunch. RSVP is required.
The Palmyra FBLA Broadcast Journalism team achieved 2nd at the State Competition and have qualified for Nationals in Anaheim, California at the end of June. The Broadcast Journalism team presented their presentation to the Palmyra Chamber of Commerce where the three high school students presented a mock news broadcast about the water line breaking in Palmyra and interviewed city officials, school officials, and local residents of Palmyra.
Palmyra City Mayor Rusty Adrain provided an update on the progress going towards the Sidewalk Project that will be happening on Main Street. The sidewalk project is being primarily funded with the TAP Grant the city of Palmyra received for 670 million dollars. Mayor Adrain informed the Palmyra Chamber of Commerce that the project is still in the environmental study stage and currently waiting approval.
The goal of the sidewalk project is to make Main Street ADA Accessible, starting with the East side first. Mayor Adrain also mentioned that the Palmyra Post Office will also be made ADA accessible in this project by adding a ramp. In similarity to Carter’s Coffee House, Adrain explained how each business will gain this ramp accessibility like Carter’s in order to work with the natural incline the City of Palmyra is sitting on. This project will also expand the sidewalk by one foot to make sure there is space for the ramps.
The sidewalk project will also include creating “bump outs” on each side of the block for better accessibility on entering the sidewalk, as well as keep the walking pedestrians safe from vehicles parking too close to the sidewalk entrances. There will be no changes on how many parking spots each block will have. The sidewalk project will also include adding drains underneath the road so the water will travel down rather than on the road. More meetings are due to happen related to this project, but the hope is for the project to begin construction by Fall this year. Mayor Adrain also mentioned about wanting to include new benches and trash receptacles in the improvements as well.
The chamber had questions related to if the sidewalk will be made of concrete or other material. Mayor Adrain explained after listening to the officials of other towns, the committee decided that it would be best to keep the concrete and not change to other materials as there will be more upkeep in the future for other options. There was also questions about if this project will affect traffic on Main Street. While no concerns have been brought up about this yet, Mayor Adrain let the chamber know that they will be working on this project one block at a time and should not impact traffic. If there is a need to be further in the road, they will change the road to a one way temporarily for construction.
