Robert “Bob” Eugene Mette

Robert “Bob” Eugene Mette

Robert “Bob” Eugene Mette, 74, of Laddonia, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, July 14, 2025 after a long, hard-fought battle with complications from COVID.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 18, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Martinsburg, with Father Derek Hooper and Deacon Ron Deimeke officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 17, at Arnold Funeral Home in Mexico.

Bob was born on December 19, 1950, in Hannibal, Missouri, to Raymond and Rose (Gordon) Mette. He married Nancy Jo Fennewald on February 20, 1976, in Palmyra, and together they shared a wonderful life for nearly 50 years.

A graduate of Palmyra High School, Class of 1968, Bob later attended Quincy Technical College. He worked for 35 years as a Power Dispatcher for Northeast Electric Power Cooperative in Palmyra. Never one to sit still for long, in his spare time, he also helped his brothers-in-law with farming in the Martinsburg area then in his retirement worked part-time for Nutrien in Perry.

Bob was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, where he served as a song leader and eucharistic minister. He was a proud member of the Knights of Columbus, having served as Grand Knight, and gave many years of volunteer service to the Martinsburg Area Fire Protection District. He also sang with the Presser Pipes Choir.

A very proud dad and papa, he would take any opportunity to brag about their accomplishments.  The grandkids have fond memories of him reading them books (and sometimes falling asleep in the middle), taking a trip to Dairy Queen, picking up fried chicken, dousing everything in hot sauce, and being willing to eat anything they cooked, no matter what ingredients were left out.

An avid car enthusiast, Bob had a deep love for Corvettes—he loved driving them, talking about them, and going to car shows. He was a handy man and could fix anything and was always willing to go out of his way to help others or teach a kid or grandkid a new skill.  Above all, he enjoyed visiting with friends and family and spending time with people at Martinsburg community events, the YMCA, or anyone who would sit still and listen.  In the last few years, he looked forward to visiting with anyone who would come sit at the table or stop by to buy eggs.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Mette of the home; three daughters, Jennifer (Robbie) Scheiner of Mexico, Julie (Jeff) Buckman of Effingham, Illinois, and Lisa (Jesse) Snow of Mexico; and ten grandchildren: Elizabeth, Ava, and Simon Scheiner; Sean, Hannah, Marshall, and Cecelia Buckman; and Adara, Scarlet, and Vella Snow.

Also surviving are his stepmother, Carol Ann Mette, eight siblings: Patty (Robert) Hall, Janice Kaden, Linda (Steve) Fessenden, Carol (Randy) Redd, Ken Mette, Debbie (Tony) White, Kathy Mette, and Mike (Patty) Mette; step siblings Kurt (Christina) Nelson and Carla (David) Carlstead;  along with many beloved in-laws: Betty Ann (Warwick) Rees, Karen (Jonnie) Fessler, Mike (Betty) Fennewald, Mark (Linda) Fennewald, Becky (Tim) Hennessy, and Fran (Dave) Grant.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Rose Mette; and an infant brother, Jerry.
