Maywood News by Rachel Bringer

The dandelions, Sweet Williams, and lilacs are blooming; and today was a beautiful spring day.
We are getting a light, gentle rain tonight, but storms are predicted for tomorrow!
South Union Baptist Church met for worship today, and Brother Dan preached a message from Luke 4:16 entitled, “Why Worship? Why Church?” Several were added to the prayer list, including Sharon Rathbun.
Luke accompanied the congregational singing for “Amazing Grace,” and the congregation sang “Happy Birthday” to Mavoureen Meyer, who celebrated last Thursday. In Sunday School, the children studied the call of Moses from the book of Exodus, and they learned the song “Pharoah, Pharoah,” to the tune of “Louie, Louie.” Children’s Sunday School begins at 9:30 a.m. each Sunday!
Don’t forget to mark your calendars for May 22nd-24th, when Pastor Randy Davis will be leading a chalk art revival at South Union Baptist Church.
There will be free meals during each service!
There were two great opportunities for a meal for a good cause on Saturday evening.
The Maywood Fire Department had its annual Fish Fry, and the Fabius Community
Center had its annual Hog Roast. The weather was perfect for both events, and Luke,
Jacob, Elijah and the other 4-H children enjoyed helping out—and eating– at the hog
roast.
Work continues on the sidewalk project in Maywood. If you haven’t seen it yet, you will be surprised on your next visit to town!
Emma, Delaina, and Donovan Meyer, who are the grandchildren of Rick and Mavoureen
Meyer, participated in the Youth Rodeo at the Kansas City Royal this week. The event
was streamed live on Youtube, so Mavoureen said they were able to watch the children
compete in several events.
I think many area former 4-Her’s and FFA members have great memories of attending the American Royal in Kansas City. More than forty years ago, I had a chance to attend
the American Royal on the way to Denver for the Western 4-H Roundup for a horsemanship public speaking contest.
The Marion County Livestock Judging team had won the state contest and was also
travelling to Denver; so Al Kennett, who was the 4-H Leader, suggested that we go to the American Royal on the way to Denver.
I think the Judging Team members were Kevin Myers, Rick Disselhorst, Dennis Bode, and Scott Burditt. While we were at the Royal, we watched several events, including a Hereford Cattle Show. Two members of the band “Alabama” –Randy Owen and
Teddy Gentry–had cattle showing at the Hereford show, and the boys told my mom and me that they had talked to the band members! I was too intimidated to go meet them; so Kevin Myers, who was exceptionally kind and also the president of our 4-H Club at Fabius, went with me and asked Randy Owen to sign an autograph for me.
Teddy Gentry went on to create the South Poll cattle breed in the late 1990’s, crossing
the Hereford breed with several other breeds. The 4-H and FFA programs provide so many opportunities for children to travel, learn, and—occasionally– meet a celebrity!
