June 26, 1901
Jas. Sparks, the ten-year-old son of WM. Sparks of Fabius township, died of lockjaw yesterday. Two weeks ago while played on a hay mow, he struck the tine of a pitchfork into his right foot. A week later lockjaw set in and after a week’s suffering death came to the little fellow’s relief.
One night last week the lights in B. Zoller’s store began to grow dim and Will Freidank went back to replenish the generator, aceteline gas being used. Jas as he had opened the generator Mr. Zoller approached with a lighted lamp. An explosion followed and both men were quite severely burned about their face and their hands. No other serious consequences followed the explosion.
Monday morning as Mrs. Tom Taylor was crossing Main Street, she was knocked down by the horses hitched to Holler’s carriage. The old lady suffered a scalp wound and a few bruises but was not seriously hurt.
John M. Sosey and Ode Rogers returned the first of the week from a trip of several weeks in various parts of Texas.
Mrs. Chas. Retti and Mrs. Ed Schneider returned last Friday from a visit of several weeks to friends in Saline county.
Master Francis and Miss Virginia Ellison were the charming little host and hostess Tuesday evening at a “Lawn Fete” given at the home of their grandparents, Dr. and Mrs. J.J. Nelson.
Mrs. T. K. Gash and Miss Beckie Gash left the first of the week for Colorado Springs, Colorado, on a pleasure trip.

While trimming a hedge fence along his farm last Friday, Rev. J.M. Kreider discovered a cardboard box containing a number of bottles. The box was found to contain sixteen pint bottles of Moonshine and is now at the County Jail in “duress vile”. We presume that the sheriff would be glad to find the owner, but doubt that there be any great rush of claimants.
Mrs. Kate Frazier, widow of Dr. L.C. Frazier, who passed away a year ago, died in Blessing Hospital in Quincy Monday morning at three o’clock.
A baby boy was born to Mr. And Mrs. Irwin Boettcher of near West Ely last Wednesday.
Miss Dorritt Dodds left Friday night for Chicago where she will spend a few days with Mr. And Mrs. J. Wayne Dodds. She will spend the rest of the summer at Kangaroo Lake Hotel, fashionable summer resort at Biley’s Harbor, Michigan.
Mr. And Mrs. Robert Schuelton and Miss Erna Stoffel, of this city, and Louis Schuelton, of Hannibal, motored to Kansas City Saturday and returned the first of the week.
Russell Dearing, wife and son, Lloyd and James Quinn of Maywood, were in Palmyra Sunday visiting Mrs. Dearing’s mother, Mrs. E. Carson Mallory.
Mr. And Mrs. Howard J. Smith are spending the week in Chicago.
Mrs. Jamie Banks and daughter, Miss Erma Lee, who are attending school in Kirksville, were the guests of Mrs. Katie Ray, Saturday and Sunday.

Mr. And Mrs. Orville Fohey are the parents of a son, born June 22.
Mr. And Mrs. Joe Haydon and son , Kenny Jo, spent Sunday with Mr. Haydon’s parents, Mr. And Mrs. R. L. Haydon and family. Miss Mary Virginia Haydon accompanied them on their return for a visit.
Mr. And Mrs. Raymond Meyers are the parents of a daughter born June 21.
Mr. And Mrs. Frank Daniel’s, Mr. And Mrs. Ben Clark and son, Jimmie Joe, spent Sunday with Mr. And Mrs. George Weller in Mexico, Missouri.
Mrs. Cliff Hollyman and daughter, Patricia, left Monday for Riverside, California to visit with Mrs. Hollyman’s sister, Miss Olive Ellis.
Miss Byrneice Juette has accepted a position as bookkeeper at the Palmyra State Bank.
Miss Ruby Wharton submitted to an emergency appendix operation at St. Elizabeth hospital in Hannibal Saturday noon. She is recovering satisfactorily.
Mr. And Mrs. Paul Hoenes have given the name Ronald Dale to their son born June 18 at St. Elizabeth hospital in Hannibal.
Mrs. J.W. Well entertained the member of the King’s Daughters at the recreation room of her home Monday evening. Mrs. Harry Robinson, president, conducted the business meeting when it was voted to contribute $5 to the Playground project being sponsored by the Kiwanis Club.

Palmyra now has a Liberty Tree and it will be officially dedicated at 2:00 Friday afternoon, July 2, beginning two weeks of Bicentennial events here. The big white oak on North Buchanan Street is on a lot owned by Corbyn Jacobs. It is a fitting coincidence that the most devoted historian of our town should have the Liberty Tree.
A new business opened in the area this week to serve the construction market. Bleigh Construction Company, which has offices in the Mississippi bottom, has opened a ready mix concrete plant to serve residents of the area.
Elizabeth Ellen Keck, daughter of Mr. And Mrs. Lee Keck of Palmyra, has been selected to participate in the International 4-H Youth Exchange (IFYE) Program.
Tiffani Michelle Crane, daughter of Mr. And Mrs. Oney M Crane, Jr., of Leadville, Colorado, celebrated her first birthday on June 17.
The First Christian Church was the setting for the wedding of Miss Leola Dee Grant and Roger William Jones at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 7, 1976.
Mr. And Mrs. Michael Bock, 303 E. Ross Street, are announcing the birth of a son born on Saturday, June 19, at St. Elizabeth’s hospital in Hannibal. He weighed 8 pounds, 1 ounce, and has been named Nathaniel Leon. The Bocks have another son, Daniel, age 3.

Independence Day will be observed in Palmyra Wednesday with a combination of fireworks and old time activities. The city’s traditional public fireworks display will take place at dusk at Flower City Park.
The Palmyra City Council Thursday continued to hold its ground against changing the city siren, this time ignoring the request to stop the siren by a Jefferson City dog advocate.
Crystal Behring not only got a new hair cut for the summer, she also helped some needy kids at the same time. Behring had 14 inches of hair cut off that was donated to the Wigs for Kids program.
The Palmyra Garden Club names a Palmyra resident each month who has shown improvement, has attractive flowers, and a well kept lawn. This month the sign was placed in the yard of Gwen and Gene Maddux, and on June 15, someone stole the sign.
The parents of Anna Celeste Tuley, St. Charles, MO, and James Jason McCammon, Hannibal, announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their children. Tuley is the daughter of Bruce and Gail Tuley, Palmyra; and McCammon is the son of Ron and Jeannie McCammon.
The parents of Julie Dianne Drebes, Camp Point, Illinois, announce the engagement of their daughter to Jeffery Iglesias Sharrow, Golden, Illinois. Drebes is the daughter of Arthur and Barbara Drebes, Palmyra; and Sharrow is the son of Roger and Virginia Sharrow, Golden.
