Girls CC team takes first at Columbia

by Mark Cheffey

The PHS cross country teams competed in the Gans Creek Classic in Columbia, and the girls came away with a first place finish in their division.

“They ran really well and did exactly what we have been working on, which was slowly working up the leader board and gaining on teams throughout the race,” said Coach Nicholas Koetters.

Laurin Sheputis led the team with a ninth-place finish, with Lauren Reid coming in at 13th and Aly Noland was also in top 20 at 17th.

“We set four personal records from the 10 girls who ran, and it was fun to see them compete and compete well against some good competition from across the state,” Koetters said.

On the boys side, Palmyra was led by Casey Hathway finishing in 19th place.

“Casey set a personal record by almost one minute and did well, running a smart race.” Koetters said.

Caleb Juette was Palmyra’s second runner to finish, placing 44th for the team that finished in 11th place.

Post-season assignments were made last Monday, and Palmyra was placed in Class 2, District 3 along with Christian, Clark County, Elsberry, Highland, Mark Twain, Monroe City, Van-Far and Westran.

Bowling Green will be the host site.
