Palmyra wrestlers compete at St. Clair
The PHS boys wrestling team competed at the sixth annual St. Clair Classic Tournament Saturday with seven Panthers finishing in the top five.
Fourteen schools competed in the event including Capital City, Eldon, Herculaneum, Kirksville, Notre Dame (Cape Girardeau, Parkway North, Parkway South, Parkway West, Southern Boone, St. Clair, St. James, Union and Wright City.
Placing in the top five for Palmyra were Brayden Stevens, first place; Jose Juarez, second place; Nolan Richards, third place; Hayes Miller, third place; Jayden Sharrow, fourth place; Audrin McElvain, fourth place; and Grayson Stevens, fifth place.
Brayden Stevens (126) went 5-0, winning four actual matches, all by fall.
He won the title match by fall at 0:42 over St. Clair’s Gavin Shoemate. He also won by fall at 1:02 over St. James’ Elijah Wilcox, by fall at 3:04 over Parkway South’s Chase Kesner and by fall at 0:49 over Herculaneum’s Josh Hurt.
Juarez (220) went 4-0 before losing the championship match by fall at 0:16 to Capital City’s Hurley Jacobs, Jr.
His victories came by fall at 3:51 over Herculaneum’s Shea Eberhardt by fall at 0:41 over Wright City’s Kyle Horneker, by fall at 0:53 over St. James’ Luca Ciacolone, and by fall at 0:13 over Union’s Chris McQueen.
Richards (195) lost his first match, but won his next four including the third-place match, by fall at 3:02 over Union’s Bradley Scott. He also won by fall at 1:15 over St. James ‘Jake Foust, by fall at 2:17 over Wright City’s Domonic Le Noir, and by fall at 2:18 over Scott again.
Miller (160) went 3-2, winning matches by fall at 0:39 over Wright City’s Kaylob Stufflebean, by fall at 0:40 over Parkway West’s Tommy Wehmeister and by fall at 2:50 in the third-place match to St. Clair’s Skylter Sanders.
Sharrow (170) went 3-2 with wins by fall at 0:47 over St. James’ Ryan Hadley, by fall at 0:41 over Parkway North’s Jonathon Brandt, and by fall at 3:50 over Union’s Michael Alvarado.
McElvain (113) went 2-3 with his lone actual match victory coming by fall at 0:51 over St. James’ Mason Saunders.
Grayson Stevens (145) went 3-2 with victories by fall at 0:46 over Palmyra’s Noah Welty; by fall at 0:33 over Herculaneum’s Chase Payne; and by fall at 0:25 over Eldon’s Evan Birdno.
Kaden Crane (106) went 4-1 winning actual matches by fall at 1:13 over Parkway South’s Jack Koerber; by fall at 0:48 over Herculaneum’s CJ Asinger, and by fall at 0:50 over Parkway West’s Liam O’Brien.
Also competing for Palmyra were Welty (145), 1-4, Xzavier Battaglio (285), 1-4, and Gideon Bogue (138) 0-5.
