Lady Mustangs head into district tourney
The Marion County R-II girls basketball team went into this week’s district tournament after losing to Canton, 51-39, on the home court, Friday.
The Lady Mustangs (12-8) fell behind early in the rescheduled contest and never really recovered.
Scoring for Marion County were Delaney Straus, 10, Madison Stewart, nine, Halle Keilholz, nine, Riley Donath, six, and Tristen Holt, four.
The day before, the Lady Mustangs earned a 63-56 win at South Shelby, Thursday.
The Lady Birds got out to a 21-18 lead, before Marion County went on a 13-5 run to lead 31-26 at the half.
The Lady Mustangs built on their lead in the third quarter to take a 50-36 advantage going into the fourth quarter.
Straus scored a game-high 21 points, while Keilholz sank three first-half three-pointers on her way to a 14-point effort.
Also scoring were Olivia Wood, 11, Donath, nine, Stewart, six, and Holt, two.
The third-seeded Lady Mustangs were to open Class 1, District 11 play Monday against sixth-seeded Brashear. However, results were not available in time for this issue.
A win would advance the Lady Mustangs to a semifinal game Wednesday against the winner of Monday’s quarterfinal between second-seeded LaPlata and seventh-seeded Novinger
