The PHS varsity football team opened the season with a tough 28-7 loss at home to Hallsville Friday.
Yet, the Panthers did have some positives to work with after a game against a strong Indian squad out to avenge two big losses to Palmyra last season including one in the quarterfinals.

Palmyra’s Ethan Redd beats the Hallsville defender to the ball in the end zone to score the Panthers’ only touchdown of the game.
Hallsville’s senior quarterback, Tyger Cobb, burned the Panthers for three touchdown passes of 75, 26 and 13 yards and also ran for another while racking up 179 total passing yards.
But, the Bobcats had to go to the air, because Palmyra’s defense stood up to hold them to just 105 rushing yards.
Palmyra had its own offensive struggles, gaining 60 yards on the ground and 131 total offensive yards, but managed to stay in the game until the end of the third quarter, when Hallsville scored its third touchdown as time expired.
The game remained scoreless until Hallsville struck big on the first possession of the second quarter, when Cobb dropped back and heaved a long pass down the right sideline where junior wide receiver Landyn Sievers caught it in stride and raced untouched for the score.

Palmyra’s sophomore quarterback, Aaron Ritchey, finds some running room against the Hallsville defense.
Cobb later found Sievers wide open down the middle for a 26-yard scoring strike that put Hallsville up 14-0 at the half.
Palmyra had its opportunities to score including after recovering an on-side kick on the games’s opening kick-off, but found the end zone only once thanks in part to a large gift-wrapped present from the Bobcats.
Palmyra took the opening kickoff of the second half and managed to reach midfield when Hallsville was called for double personal foul pentalties that gave Palmyra the ball on the Bobcat 15.
On the very next play, sophomore quarterback, Aaron Ritchey hit junior wide receiver Ethan Redd with a touchdown pass, and the Panthers were back in the game, down 14-7.
But, Palmyra would not be able to answer Cobb’s third touchdown pass, 13 yards to AJ Austene, and a late rushing touchdown by Cobb.
Ritchey ended up completing nine of 14 passes for 71 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions, while leading the team in rushing, gaining 52 yards on 20 carries.

Palmyra’s Luke Triplett sacks the Hallsville quarterback.
Ryan McKeown was the leading receiver, catching four balls for 39 yards. Nolyn Richards also contributed 44 yards on the ground.
Luke Triplett led the team with 6.5 tackles, including a sack. McKeown had five tackles and Adam Goodwin, 4.5.

Palmyra’s Christian Johnson upends the Hallsville quarterback.
Landyn Smith collected two interceptions for Palmyra to go along with 3.5 tackles.
Palmyra will stay at home for its next game to host a Bowling Green squad which could also be seeking retribution after several years of losses against the Panthers.
The Bobcats will come into town on the strength of 60-6 trouncing of Van-Far this past Friday.
Districts were announced this past week, and Palmyra was placed in a rather strange Class 2, District 7 which also includes fellow Clarence Cannon Conference opponents, Brookfield, Clark County and Macon, but also Maryville and Trenton on the west side of the state.
Monroe City is now in Class 1, District 2, Highland and south Shelby in Class 1 District 6 and Centralia in Class 2, District 6.
