The Marion County R-II girls basketball team earned a win at home over Madison, Thursday, after falling to Higbee on the road Tuesday.
The Lady Mustangs (6-2) got out to a 17-12 lead before going on a strong 16-3 run to lead Madison by 18 at the half.
They then held Madison to just eight second-half points in clinching a 52-23 win.
Delaney Straus exploded for 23 points on 10 two-point field goals and three free throws, while Halle Keilholz sank three three-pointers during the second-quarter run and finished with 10 points.
Also scoring were Madison Stewart, who hit two treys, and scored seven points, Riley Donath, five, Tristen Holt, four, Karissa Kennedy, two and Olivia Wood, one.
A rough third quarter doomed the Lady Mustangs in their 50-47 loss at Higbee.
After an even first half that saw them finish with a one-point edge, the Lady Mustangs were out-scored 18-5 in the third quarter.
Marion County made a valiant comeback, but their 20-11 fourth-quarter run fell short.
Straus led the team with 16 points, while Stewart joined her in double figures with 10.
Also scoring were Keilholz, nine, Donath, seven, Wood, three, Riley Holt, one, and Tristen Holt, one.
Marion County was scheduled to host LaPlata, Monday. Results were not available for this week’s issue.
The Lady Mustangs open the new year at Brashear, Jan. 4.
