The PHS varsity girls basketball team took third place at the Highland Tournament with a 55-37 win over Scotland County Saturday.

Palmyra’s Claire Williams shoots from the lane against Scotland County.
In a unique start to the game, Scotland County’s Hannah Feeney scored her team’s first 12 points as the Lady Tigers out-scored Palmyra 16-11 in the first quarter.
But, Palmyra figured things out and out-scored Feeney 43-4, and Scotland County by 22 the rest of the way, even shutting out the Lady Tigers entirely in the fourth quarter.
Palmyra enjoyed balanced scoring with Claire Williams and Candra King leading the way with 12 each, while Taytum White scored 11.
Also contributing were Sydney Compton, eight, Abbey Redd, five, Jansen Juette, four, and Alaina Loman, two.

Palmyra’s Abbey Redd battles a Scotland County player for possession of the ball.
The Lady Panthers could not upset second-seeded Kirksville, losing in the semifinals Thursday, 49-39.
Kirksville jumped out to an 18-11 lead and managed to hold Palmyra off at arm’s length by outscoring the Lady Panthers 31-28 the rest of the way.
King sank seven field goals in scoring a game-high 16 points.
Also contributing on offense were White, eight, Compton, five, Williams, five, Juette, four and Ashley Bode, one.
The Lady Panthers opened the tournament with a convincing 57-28 quarterfinal win over Clark County Tuesday.
Palmyra came off the opening tip-off in strong fashion with a 17-6 run and went into halftime up 34-10.
White and Willliams sank all five of the team’s three-pointers and both scored a game-high 14 points.
Also scoring were King, nine, Juette, eight, Compton, seven, Loman, two, Bode, two, and Jaynee Durst, one.
This week, the Lady Panthers were scheduled to travel to North Point, a new high school in Wentzville, Tuesday, and to Centralia Friday.
The tournament games were pushed back a day due to the weather. The championship game between Macon and Kirksville was delayed until this Saturday.
