Ellyse Lorenson, a freshman member of the PHS girls wrestling team, won a district title in the 141-pound weight class and advanced to the upcoming state wrestling tournament.

Lorenson was one of three PHS girls wrestlers to compete at the District 2 Tournament at North Point High School in Wentzville, but was the only one to earn a state berth.
“Elly Lorenson wrestled great this weekend,” said Coach Josh Buatte, who noted the weather played havoc with the tournament, which was condensed to a one-day even.

“But she took everything in stride and concentrated on what she could control,” Buatte said. “As a freshmen, she handled
everything like she had been there before.
“I an very excited to watch her wrestle at state.”
The state tournament for both boys and girls will be held in the University of Missouri’s Mizzou Arena in Columbia, Feb. 17-19.
Lorenson dominated in winning her title, winning all five of her matches by fall, including the title match at 1:25 over Holt’s Lainey Ferrell.
She advanced to the title match by fall at 2:43 in the semifinals over Rock Bridge’s Socorro Rodriguez after winning in the quarterfinals by fall at 2:21 over Centralia’s Gretchen Marriott.

Lorenson opened the competition with a win by fall at 2:27 over Brookfield’s Saasha Weaver, and a win by fall at 1:17 over Battle’s Emmett Bryan.
Palmyra’s Grace Fessenden reached the quarterfinals in the 194-pound weight class before losing by fall at 1:00 to Liberty’s Caroline Ward.
She failed finish in the top four to qualify for state when she lost by fall at 2:44 to Capital City’s Rebecca Porting in the fourth round of the consolation bracket.

Earlier, Fessenden won by fall at 0:16 to Troy Buchanan’s Jayneigh Spencer.
Palmyra’s Anna Ragar went 2-2 in the 115-pound weight classs but failed to qualify for state.
She lost in the first round by fall at 1:16 to Fulton’s Emmy Begemann and received a bye in the first round of consolation, and won by fall at 2:27 over Marshall’s Alexis Jones, but then lost by fall at 2:37 to Centralia’s Madie Shelton.
The boys team will compete in the Class 1, District 3 Tournament at Lafayette County C-I High School in Higginsville this Friday and Saturday.
