The PHS varsity baseball team got off to a tough start losing both games at a cluster at Southern Boone Saturday.
The Panthers fell to the host team, 13-3, and Fulton, 10-2, both larger Class 4 schools.
Despite the scores, Coach Mark Loman found it a positive in that it was good to get out on the field and play actual games.
“We were able to look at a lot of people at different positions, and our coaches were able to see the things we need to refine and adjust,” Loman said. “Fulton and Southern Boone are both quality teams, and we were glad to see good pitching.
“A positive was we thought our approach at the plate was pretty good, considering the pitching we saw.
“We put the ball in play often, but we missed some signs as we are refining offensive situations.”
The Panthers were out hit 15-2 in the loss to Southern Boone and also made five fielding errors that led to five unearned runs.
Alex Wilson and Ethan Tallman had the Panthers’ two hits, both singles, with Adam Goodwin and Landyn Smith sharing the pitching duties.
Palmyra produced eight hits against Fulton, but managed just the two runs in the third inning.
Goodwin and Tallman both went 2-for-2 in the game.
Tallman, Drew Comer and Nolyn Richards pitched for the Panthers.
“In the first game, we surrendered too many walks and hit batters and had several errors,” Loman said. “In the second game, some untimely errors hurt us.
“I thought our pitching was better in the second game, but Southern Boone hit the ball very well and we had a few errors.
The Panthers return to the road this week, playing at Elsberry, Tuesday, and Canton, Thursday.
District classification
The Panthers have been assigned to Class 3, District 6, along with Clark County, Highland, Mark Twain, Monroe City and South Shelby.
The tournament site has yet to be determined.
