Mustangs fall to M. Twain, Brashear, North Shelby

The Marion County R-II baseball team suffered three losses last week to Brashear, North Shelby and Mark Twain.
The week ended with a tough 21-14 loss at home to Mark Twain, Friday.
The Mustangs (5-5) scored enough runs to win the game while pounding out 11 hits including two home runs.
But the pitching gave up 15 hits, including two home runs, 12 walks and five hit-batsmen to the Tigers who batted around twice in the seventh inning to score 13 runs and take the lead for good.
Hitting stars for Marion County were:
Spencer Whetstone, 3-for-3 with a double, four runs scored, and two walks;
Root Cheney, 2-for-4 with a home run and three runs scored;
Cooper Stotts, 2-for-4 with two runs scored;
Joey Lagemann, 2-for-4 with a run scored; and
Porter Britt, 1-for-5 with a home run.
The Mustangs lost a heartbreaker, 8-7, at home against North Shelby, Tuesday.
Marion County went up 3-1 in the first on a three-run homer by Cheney, only to have the Raiders tie it in the third.
A fourth-inning rally built on two walks and two Raider errors put the Mustangs back on top, 6-3, but North Shelby answered with three runs in the fifth inning.
Three walks and an error lead to North Shelby’s go ahead run in the sixth, but singles by Whetstone and Jackson Stewart, along with a Raider error tied the game in the bottom of the inning.
North Shelby then pushed a run across in the top of the seventh and then retired Marion County in order in the bottom of the inning for the win.
Stotts went the first five, giving up seven runs, four earned on five hits and four walks while striking out nine, before giving way to Jackson Stewart, who pitched the final two innings.
Whestone and Cheney both had two hits to lead the Mustangs.
The game was originally scheduled for April 21, but was moved to tonight due to the rainy forceast.
The Mustangs opened the week with an 8-5 loss at Brashear, Monday.
Marion County jumped out to a 2-0 first inning lead, only to have Brashear go up 3-2 in the bottom of the inning.
The Mustangs trailed by onegoing into the bottom of the sixth when Brashear scored three to lead 8-4.
Marion County scored a run in the top of the seventh and had the potential tying run at the plate with two on and two out, when Stotts was caught trying to steal third, ending the game.
Whetstone started and went five innings giving up three home runs and seven runs, five earned, before giving way to Lagemann, who pitched the final inning.
Cheney had two of the team’s four singles in the game.
This week, the Mustangs are scheduled to host Madison, Monday, Highland, Tuesday, and Higbee, Friday.
District host
North Shelby will host this year’s Class 1, District 13 Tournament May 13-22. Other teams in the district are Marion County R-II, Atlanta, Bevier, Brashear, Knox County and La Plata.
