The PHS varsity softball team went into this week’s district tournament on a losing streak through Thursday.
The Lady Panthers (10-15) had lost five in a row after falling last week to Centralia, Troy and Canton.
The Lady Panthers were to complete the regular season Monday at Hannibal before competing in Class 3 districts starting Tuesday at Winfield.
Palmyra got blasted at Centralia, 11-1 Thursday, to complete Clarence Cannon Conference play with a 3-4 record.
Centralia out hit Palmyra 9-4 with two home runs and a double while scoring runs in four of the five innings.
Palmyra managed just four singles and a double, two of which scored the team’s only run in the first inning.
Kennedy Wilson pitched the entire game, giving up seven earned runs while striking out two.
The day before, Palmyra traveled to Troy and lost 9-2 after the Trojans scored eight of their runs in the first inning.
Only three of Troy’s runs were earned as Palmyra committed four fielding errors.
Palmyra was out-hit 14-6, with Hailey Kroeger getting a double for the team’s only extra-base hit.
Wilson pitched the first four innings, giving up 11 hits and a walk, while striking out one.
The Lady Panthers also lost 1-0 at home to Canton last Monday.
It was the third time Palmyra has lost by that score this season.
The Tigers scored an unearned run in the top of the first and made it stand, despite being out-hit, 6-2, by the Lady Panthers.
Palmyra’s Kennedy Wilson was the tough-luck losing pitcher, giving up just the two hits and two walks while striking out nine.
One of those hits came with one out in the top of the first, which was followed by a walk and an outfield error that scored the only run.
The Lady Panthers looked like they would get that run back in the bottom of the first when Lexi Peuster doubled and moved to third on a single by Wilson with two outs. But Hailey Kroeger hit into a fielder’s choice to end the inning.
Palmyra would have runners reach second base four more times in the game but could not get the clutch hit.
JV completes season
The junior varsity team finished the season with a 7-4-1 record after losing the finale, 11-0 at Centralia Thursday.
Palmyra managed just three hits over three and two-thirds innings of action, singles by Clara Keim and Jaeda Parker.
