Palmyra’s doubles pair of Maura Gottman and Molly Gottman added their names to PHS sports history with a third-place finish in Class 1 doubles at the state individual girls tennis championships in Springfield Saturday.

Sisters Molly (left) and Maura Gottman, a sophomore and senior respectively, took third place at state in individual doubles competition Saturday.
Playing at the Cooper Tennis Complex, the pair defeated the Mt. Vernon pair, Isabella Mosley and Allison Schubert, 6-2, 6-4, in the third-place match.
Earlier in the day, the Gottman sisters lost in the semifinals, 6-1, 6-0, to the eventual champions from Kennett, Claire Bean and Handley McAtee.
The Gottmans began the tournament with a 7-5, 6-1 first-round win over Clayton’s Riley Reeves and Riley Zimmerman.
They then won in the quarterfinals later in the day, 6-3, 6-1, over Notre Dame de Sion’s Lauryn Murphy and Elizabeth Vance.
