The Marion County R-II boys basketball team reached the .500 mark with three straight wins last week over Wellsville-Middleton, Macon County and Madison.

The Mustangs went to 7-7 with a 58-25 win at Madison Thursday.

They got out to a 14-4 lead and went into halftime up by 25.

Madison’s Reed Layton led all scorers with 19 points, but was the only player on the five-person squad to sink a field goal.

Ten Mustangs scored including Jackson Stewart, 11, Wyatt Goldinger, 10, Porter Britt, eight, Joey Lagemann, eight, Caden Stotts, seven, Mason Wood, seven, Levi Wright, three, Wyatt Tuley, two, and Root Cheney, two.

The Mustangs jump-started their way to 58-53 win at home over Wellsville-Middleton, last Monday.

Stewart poured in four three-pointers and Cheney, two, in leading the Mustangs to a 21-14 start.

The Tigers recovered after trailing 30-24 at the half to cut Marion County’s lead to two going into the final period, but the Mustangs held on thanks to big three-pointers from Lagemann and Stewart.

Lagemann ended up leading Marion County with 18 points, after sinking three long-shots and seven of 13 free-throw attempts, while Stewart finished with five three-pointers and 16 points.

Cheney had 12 points on four three-pointers, while Goldinger scored seven points and Porter Britt, five.

Marion County also earned a 57-42 win at Macon County, Tuesday. Details were not made available.

The Mustangs are competing in the North Shelby Tournament this week.
