The PHS varsity boys basketball team ended a three-game winless streak and opened Clarence Cannon Conference action with a 54-49 win at home over Centralia Friday.
The Panthers (11-4, 1-0 CCC) out-scored Centralia 42-28 then held off the visitors late rush for the victory.

Palmyra sank just two fourth-quarter field goals, a three-pointer by Trey Smyser and a two-pointer by Ryan McKeown, but the team sank seven of nine free throws down the stretch to counter Centralia’s late nine field-goal barrage.
Smyser came off the bench to lead the Panthers with 16 points, sinking four from outside the arch.
Also contributing were Carson Hicks, 14, McKeown, seven, Tyler Banta, five, Bronson Juette, four, Drew Copenhaver, three, Jon Lundberg, three, and Bear Bock, two.
Palmyra lost to Kirksville for the second time in a week, 48-37, at home last Tuesday.

The Panthers trailed by just one at the half, before the Tigers out-scored them 29-18 the rest of the way.
Part of the difference was at the free-throw line where Kirksville went 11-for-18 compared to Palmyra’s 2-for-4.
Scoring for the Panthers were Bear Bock, 12, Tyler Banta, 10, Ethan Redd, five, Bronson Juette, four, Drew Copenhaver, three, and Trey Smyser, three.
The Panthers are competing in their home tournament this week.
