The Marion County R-II boys basketball team went into this week’s Brashear Tournament on the strength of  a 60-38 win at home over Silex Saturday.

A second quarter surge helped produce the victory as the Mustangs turned a three-point lead into a commanding 29-11 edge into halftime.

Joey Lagemann missed two first-quarter free throws, but then found his touch by scoring a game-high 26 points the rest of the way, hitting two three-pointers, eight other field goals and four free throws.

Also scoring were Wyatt Goldinger, 11, Caden Stotts, seven, Root Cheney, four, Gavin Handy, four, and Mason Wood, two. 

Last Monday, the Mustangs fell at Knox County, 65-35.

Knox County got out to a 18-9 lead and went into the final period up by 25.

Goldinger hit a three-pointer and five other field goals while sinking five of seven from the line to lead Marion County with 18 points.

Also scoring were Lagemann, 12 points, Jackson Stewart, three, and Levi Wright, two.

Knox County’s Kellen Parish scored all of his game-high 26 points during the second and third quarters.

The sixth-seeded Mustangs were to open the Brashear Tournament Tuesday against the third-seeded host squad.   

They then finish the regular season at home against Canton, Feb. 14.

The Class 1, District 11 Tournament will be held in LaPlata  Feb. 20-25 and include Marion County, LaPlata, Atlanta, Bevier, Brashear, North Shelby and Novinger.
