Mustangs fall to Bevier, Knox Co. to start season

The Marion County R-II baseball team opened the season with losses to Bevier and Knox County last week.

After having their first two games against Mark Twain and Community postponed the week before, the Mustangs managed to get two of three scheduled games in last week including a 10-1 loss at home to Knox County Wednesday.

The Eagles scored two in the second, three in the third, one in the fourth and four in the sixth before the Mustangs could plate their lone run in bottom of the sixth on a home run by Root Cheney. 

Knox County out-hit Marion County 12-3.

Nick Kelso hit a fourth-inning double with two outs, and Joey Lagemann hit a fourth-inning single.

Lagemann started and took loss, with Porter Britt, pitching in relief.  

The Mustangs opened the season with a 10-4 loss at home to Bevier last Monday.

Marion County got out to a 3-0 lead with a run in the first,  and two in the second, broke a 3-3 tie with a run in the fifth, and had that 4-3 edge going into the top of the seventh with three outs to go, when Bevier rallied for seven runs.

Joey Lagemann got things started with a lead-off single in the top bottom of the first, moved to third on walks to Nathan Wright and Root Cheney and scored on a single by Jonathan Goodwin.

Lagemann and Wright drove in the two runs in the second, and Jackson Stewart singled in the sixth, stole second and third and scored on an error.

Cheney started on the mound and was relieved by Stewart and Goodwin.

The Mustangs were also supposed to host South Shelby, but the game was postponed due to the weather.

This week, the Mustangs were scheduled to host Clopton, Monday, and Wellsville-Middleton, Tuesday.

Marion County has been assigned to Class 1, District 13 this season along with Atlanta, Bevier, Brashear, LaPlata, Macon County and North Shelby.
