Mustangs lose tough one to Novinger, 9-8

The Marion County R-II baseball team lost a tough one, 9-8, on Friday at home against Novinger.
The Mustangs had a 7-2 lead going into the sixth inning but gave it up when Novinger rallied for six to tie it up, went ahead with one in the seventh and blanked Marion County in the bottom of the inning.
Root Cheney got the Mustangs on the scoreboard in the first inning with a solo home run.
Marion County added three more in the second inning when Nathan Wright singled, Paden Olson tripled, Porter Britt was hit by a pitch and R. Baldwin singled.
A walk by Cheney and a double by Olsen gave the Mustangs a 5-0 lead in the third inning.
Novinger scored two in the fifth, but the Mustangs answered with two of their own on a solo home run by Nick Kelso and singles by Wright and Olson along with a two-base error.
Novinger then broke out for six in the sixth on six walks, a single, a home run and two fielding errors by the Mustangs.
Novinger went ahead in the seventh on a two singles and a double, and Marion County went down in order in the bottom of the inning to end the game.
The Mustangs had no answer for Higbee during their 16-1, three-inning road loss last Tuesday.
Marion County was out-hit 8-3 as the Tigers scored four runs in the first, 10 in the second and two in the third.
The Mustangs scored their only run in the top of the first on a lead-off single by Joey Lagemann, who stole second and scored on Cheney’s one-out single.
The Mustangs saw their three-game winning streak end when they were trounced by Louisiana, 13-1, on the road last Monday.
The Bulldogs scored five runs in the first and shortened the game to five innings with a four-run fourth.
Louisiana out hit the Mustangs, 13-1, with Jackson Stewart getting the only safety for Marion County.
The Mustangs were scheduled to wrap up the regular season at home against Missouri Military Academy, Monday.
Marion County received the sixth seed in the Class 1, District 13 Tournament at LaPlata May 12-17.
The Mustangs will play third-seeded Bevier at 7:15 p.m. this Friday.
