Panthers fall to Hannibal, South Shelby, Liberty (Ill.)
The PHS varsity baseball team lost to Hannibal, Liberty, Ill. and South Shelby last week as the district tournament draws near.
The Panthers lost their Clarence Cannon Conference finale, 5-1 at South Shelby, Thursday.
The Cardinals scored two in the second on a walk and two doubles, and answered Palmyra’s lone run in the fourth with three in the fifth.
Ethan Tallman, was the tough-luck losing pitcher, going 4.2 innings and giving up all five runs, only two of them earned, along with just three hits and three walks while striking out 11.
Raeson Miller scored the Palmyra run when he singled to lead off the fourth, and came around to home on singles by Jon Lundberg, Gavin Greving and Colby Cook.
Palmyra finished conference play at 1-6.
The Panthers made a valiant comeback but it fell short in a 5-4 loss at Liberty (Ill.) Monday.
After both teams scored two runs in the first inning, Liberty took the advantage with three in the fifth, but almost gave the lead away in the top of the seventh.
In fact, Palmyra was down to the last out when Colby Cook reached on an outfield error and went all the way to third base.
Ty Haskins also kept the game alive by driving Cook in with a single and then scored on Rayce Ragar’s double.
But the next batter struck out to end the threat and the game.
Believe it or not, Palmyra out-hit Liberty 10-1.
Panther pitchers issued nine walks with five of those issued free passes coming around to score.
The Palmyra defense also committed five errors, two of which led to two unearned runs.
Drew Comer started on the mound and gave up the lone Liberty hit along with all five runs while walking seven over 4.2 innings. Haskins finished, striking out three while walking two.
Raeson Miller, Cook and Rager all had two hits each to lead the team.
The Panthers also lost to Hannibal, 20-0, at home this past Friday.
The Pirates out hit Palmyra 17-4 in scoring 11 runs in the first, one in the second, one in the fourth and seven in the fifth.
Miller, Geving, Ragar and Tallman all hit singles for Palmyra.
The Panthers close out the regular season Wednesday at Kirksville.
