The PHS varsity girls tennis team opened the season 3-2 with victories over Moberly, Hannibal and Fulton while falling to Quincy Notre Dame and Macomb, (lll.).
“We lost four seniors who played varsity last year, but the players who have stepped into those varsity spots have done well,” said Coach Alysha Barnett. “We had a lot of JV players who worked very hard in the off season last winter and really improved and have already done a nice job for the team.”
The Lady Panthers opened the season with a 9-0 victory at home over Moberly, Aug. 29.
Winning singles matches were Molly Gottman, Laura Noland, Marina Meyer, Kenzie Bollin, Natalie Bartz and Maggie Keim.
Winning doubles matches were Gottman and Noland, Meyer and Keim and Bollin and Bartz.
Palmyra then fell at home to QND, 3-6, Aug. 30.
Winning singles matches were Meyer, Bollin and Bartz.
Palmyra defeated Hannibal, 5-4, on the road the next day.
Winning singles matches were Meyer, Bollin, Bartz and Keim.
Keim and Hadlie Kroeger won their doubles match.
Palmyra hosted Macomb Sept. 5 and lost 4-5.
Winning singles matches were Gottman, Bartz and Keim, while Gottman and Noland won their doubles match.
The Lady Panthers blanked Fulton on the road Sept. 8.
Winning singles matches were Gottman, Noland, Meyer, Bollin, Bartz and Keim.
Winning doubles matches were Gottman and Noland, Meyer and Bartz, and Bollin and Keim.
The junior varsity squad has also gone 3-2 to start the season which opened with a 7-0 win over Moberly, Aug. 29.
Winning doubles matches were Kroeger and Marissa Gottman, Emily Comer and Ashley Bode, Elizabeth Salo and Rilee Shrum, Ava Fohey and Sara Kliewer, Quinley Bond and Rylinn Plank and Emma Clark and Kliewer.
Palmyra fell to QND, 3-4, Aug. 30.
Winning doubles matches were Comer and Bode, Salo and Shrum and Bond and Plank.
Palmyra beat Hannibal, Aug. 31.
Winning doubles matches were Gottman and Bode, Comer and Salo, Madisyn Wilt and Shrum, Kliewer and Bond and Plank and Clark.
The team lost to Macomb, 3-4, Sept. 5.
Winning doubles matches were Kroeger and Gottman, Comer and Bode and Salo and Shrum.
Palmyra downed Fulton, 6-1, Sept. 8.
Winning doubles matches were Kroager and Bode, Comer and Salo, Gottman and Wilt, Shrum and Erin McChristy, Fohey and Kliewer, and Bond and Plank.
“Overall our JV team has done a very nice job,” Barnett said. “We have 15 JV players and several new to tennis, and they all really want to get better and work very hard.”2023 PHS Girls
