Bulldogs drop Panthers for 40-22 loss

The PHS varsity football team came out flat early in a 40-22 loss at Brookfield Friday.
Hoping to build on momentum gained during their first victory the week before, the Panthers (1-4) spotted the Bulldogs 24 points before out scoring them 22-16 the rest of the way.

Two costly plays by Palmyra gave the Bulldogs short fields to work with to start the game, and they capitalized to take and 16-0 leadhalfway through the first quarter.
An interception on their first possession of the game gave Brookfield the ball on the Palmyra 17.
Five plays later, the Bulldogs’ Peyton Parn went over from the three and also caught a two-point pass to give Brookfield a quick 8-0 lead.
Brookfield blocked a Panther punt and needed only two plays to score on a 23-yard pass from quarterback Trayce Switzer to Parn leading to a 16-0 lead with 5:23 left in the first quarter.
Brookfield then stopped the Panthers next drive short and went 82 yards for a score to go up 24-0 early in the second quarter.
Palmyra got their offense going on their fourth possession to score and trim the Bulldog lead to 24-6, but Brookfield went 4-for-4 on their first possessions to score and stretch the advantage to 30-6.
Palmyra used good field position after a kickoff to respond again, this time for a four-play, 50-yard drive and trailed 30-14 with 2:34 left.
And it looked like the Panthers would hold that score at halftime when Brookfield faced fourth and 10 from the Palmyra 20, but used some razzle-dazzle to go up 36-14 at the half.
Quarterback Trayce Switzer tossed the ball to behind the line of scrimmage to Colton Parn who threw it to a wide-open Peyton Parn for the touchdown.
The two teams swapped touchdowns in the second half to complete the scoring.
Brookfield (2-3) apparently made some offensive adjustments since their last game, as their point total more than doubled their output during the previous four games.

Palmyra’s first score of the game came on a four-yard touchdown run by Aaron Ritchey that capped an eight-play, 74-yard drive that featured a 13-yard run by Ritchey and an 18-yard pass
from quarterback Rylan Compton to running back Wyatt Augsburg.
Augspurg also caught a six-yard touchdown pass from Compton for the team’s second touchdown.
Raeson Miller scored the final touchdown on a pass from pass from Compton.
Palmyra gathered 344 yards of total offense with 187 coming on the ground.
Ritchey led the Panther rushing attack with 99 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries.
Gideon Bogue added 40 yards on five carries, while Compton rushed for 21 yards on two carries and Augspurg 13 yards on two carries.
Compton had a strong night passing, completing 14 of his 20 attempts for 157 yards and two touchdowns. But he was picked off twice.
Pierce White caught four passes for 49 yards, Miller four passes for 33 ayrds, Augspurg, five passes for 31 yards and Daniel Dames one pass for 30 yards.

On defense, Bogue led the team in tackles with eight, and was followed by Hammond, six, Augspurg, 5.5, Ritchey five, and Laden Simmons, 4.5.
Henley Snow intercepted a pass and Ritchey blocked an extra point attempt.
Miller, Bogue, Ritchey, Simmons,Bogue and Tyler Spicknall all had one pass breakups
Next up
Palmyra will host a 3-2 Monroe City team for homecoming this Friday.
Monroe City opened the season with three wins before losing back to back games to South Shelby, 59-6, and Centralia, 27-24.
The three victories came against Mark Twain, 32-16, Montgomery City, 44-34, and Highland, 30-14.
