The PHS varsity football team fell short in an offensive battle for a 36-34 homecoming loss to rival Monroe City Friday.

Palmyra’s Gideon Bogue and Wyatt Augspurg put a high-low hit on a Monroe City ball carrier.
Palmyra (1-5) took a 34-28 lead at the 8:29 mark of the fourth quarter on a six-yard touchdown run by Rylan Compton, but failed to score on the two-point conversion attempt, leaving an opening for Monroe City.
And, the visitors took advantage, going on a 10-play, 65-yard drive and scoring on a four-yard TD run by Trey Smyser.
The former Palmyra quarterback then connected with Waylon DeGrave on a two-point pass to put Monroe City on top, 36-34.
Still, with 4:11 left to play, Palmyra had plenty of time to retake the lead, and appeared to be on their way to doing just that thanks to fine field position at the Monroe 49 after the kickoff.
Five straight runs by Aaron Ritchey gave the Panthers first and 10 at the Monroe City 20 before disaster hit.
A bad shot-gun snap went over the head of Compton, who managed to recover the ball by putting the Panthers at the 33 facing second and 23 to go for a first down.
Ritchey was then tackled for loss on the next play resulting in third down and 27.

Palmyra’s Gideon Bogue heads towards the end zone for Palmyra’s first score of the second half against Monroe City.
Compton completed a pass to Daniel Dames to the Monroe City 18 yard line, but Ritchey took the ball on fourth down and reached the 11, one-yard short.
Monroe City took the ball on downs and went into victory formation to run out the remaining time for the win.
After stopping Monroe City on downs during the game’s first possession, Palmyra looked to make the game’s first score, reaching the Monroe 32 before a Compton pass was picked off at the nine.
Three plays later, Smyser sped through the line for a 64-yard touchdown run that gave Monroe City an early 6-0 lead.
Palmyra answered back, however, with a nine-play, 47-yard drive capped by an 11-yard touchdown run by Ritchey, who would end up piling up 276 yards, on 36 carries in the game.
Palmyra couldn’t convert the two-pointer leaving the score tied.

Palmyra Aaron Ritchey celebrates scoring a touchdown.
But, even better, the Panthers pulled off a successful on-side kick and were back on offense at the Monroe 49.
Six plays later, Ritchey found a hole and weaved his way through the Monroe backfield for a 29-yard touchdown run. And his two-point run put Palmyra on top 14-6.
Monroe City answered on its next possession going 38-yards on a 15-play drive and scoring on a one-yard plunge by Jayden Holland. Smyser’s two-point pass to Quincy Mayfield tied the game back up.
With 3:42 left in the half, Palmyra hoped to retake the lead before the break, but the drive ended on downs at the Monroe City 47.
Monroe took advantage of the time left to score quickly going 53 yards on three plays that included a 28-yard pass from Smyser to DeGrave and a 17-yard touchdown pass from Smyser to Dylan Ross with 43 seconds left in the half.
Monroe failed on its two-point attempt leaving the score 20-14 Monroe at the half.
Palmyra came out fired up at the break and scored touchdowns on its first two possession to take a 28-20 lead well into the third quarter.
The Panthers tied the game on a six-yard run by Gideon Bogue to cap a 46-yard drive.

Palmyra’s Aaron Ritchey makes a big gain against Monroe City.
And after stopping Monroe City on downs, Palmyra drove 59-yards on eight plays and scored on a four-yard run by Ritchey.
Wyatt Auspurg ran the ball in for two, giving Palmyra an eight-point edge with 3:59 left in the third quarter.
Monroe City tied the game on an 11 yard run by Holland and a successful two-point conversion at the 11:12 mark of the fourth quarter.
A win would have put the Palmyra in a three-way tie for third place in the Clarence Cannon Conference. Instead, the Panthers are tied for sixth with Highland.
