The PHS girls varsity tennis team won the Class 1, District 7 Tournament and advanced to sectional play.
Meanwhile, the team’s top double’s pair of Laura Noland and Molly Gottman advanced to state tournament after winning sectionals Saturday in Mexico.

By beating Columbia Independent’s Lillian Thies and Eleanor Young, 6-2, 6-1, the pair earned a spot at the state tournament to be held in Springfield this Friday and Saturday.
First-round matches begin at 1 p.m. Friday at the Cooper Tennis Complex.
The pair advanced to sectionals after winning the district championship match by default against Lutheran St. Charles Saturday.
The Lutheran St. Charles pair had to default after one of the players was injured during their previous match.
Noland and Gottman won their first-round match 6-6, 6-0 over a pair from Fulton, and their semifinal match, 6-4, 6-2, over a Mexico pair.

The entire team traveled to Columbia Monday to take on Father Tolton Regional Catholic in the first round of sectionals.
Results were not available in time for this issue.
The winner was to advance and play Tuesday against the winner of Monday’s match between Clayton and Duchesne.
The winner of that match will advance to the state team tournament to be held Saturday, Oct. 21, at the Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield.
Palmyra advanced to sectionals with a 5-1 win over Lutheran St. Charles, Thursday.
Winning singles matches were: Gottman, 6-4, 6-1; Noland, 0-6, 7-4 (10-4); and Marina Meyer, 6-3, 6-0.
Winning doubles matches were: Gottman and Noland, 8-5; and Kenzie Bollin and Natalie Bartz, 8-4.
The Lady Panthers opened district play with a 6-0 win at home over Fulton.
Winning singles matches were: Gottman, 6-0, 6-1; Nolland, 6-2, 6-0; and Bollin, 6-1, 6-1.
Winning doubles matches were: Gottman and Noland, 8-1; Meyer and Maggie Keim, 8-3; and Bollin and Bartz, 8-2.
