The PHS boys golf team has a mixture of experienced and young players heading into the 2023 season.
New golf coach, Steven Jones, hopes the experienced players lead the younger ones as they all try to qualify for state.
“Coach Chris Parsons did a great job with the program the last couple of years, and I am looking forward to continuing to build on that,” Jones said, “A point of emphasis for me is to make sure we are a team and cheering for one another. I am hoping the competition between the players will push them to be successful on the course.
“Ultimately, my job as the head coach is to prepare our players not only for the golf course but also life.
Leading the team this year are Brett Tuter, the lone returning senior, as well as Jonas Janes, a sophomore and lone returning state qualifier, as well as Aaron Ritchey, a junior, and Preston Fuget, a sophomore, who saw some varsity action last year.
“I am looking forward to seeing Jonas continue to develop and make a return to state,” Jones said. “Aaron has continued to improve over the past year, and I look forward to seeing him pursue a shot at state.”
Other returning players include Jeremiah Edwards, a junior, and sophomores Tate Hammond, Shawn Hirner and Kyle Jackson.
Looking to make the team as freshmen are Skeeter Kroeger, Tony White, Abram Getz and Abram Smyser.
“There is a lot of competition for the spots on both the varsity and J.V. teams this year,” Jones said. “All 12 players have the potential to make an impact this year.
“This will be a fun group to watch over the next couple of seasons.”
