The PHS varsity softball team went 1-1 to start the season after winning the home-opener, 15-7, over Mark Twain Thursday.

The Lady Panthers broke out with four runs in the first, three in the second and two in the third to get out to a strong 9-4 lead.
Palmyra’s Arizona Mitchell, a sophomore, started on the mound and held the Lady Tigers scoreless through the first two frames, before giving up four runs in the third and two in the fourth.
She ended up going five innings to earn the win, giving up three hits and five walks while striking out eight.
Freshman Marney Plunkett pitched the final two innings, giving up one run on three hits and a walk while striking out three.

Meanwhile, the offense banged out 16 hits including five for extra bases.
Hitting stars included:
Alaina Loman, 4-for-4 with a double, three stolen bases, five runs scored and two RBI;
Lexie Peuster, 3-for-4 with a triple, double, a stolen base, two runs scored and one driven in; and
Jerzey Ramey, 3-for-5 with four RBI and a run scored.
Thursday’s win was the first career high school coaching victory for the team’s new head coach, Jenny Jansen.
The Lady Panthers opened the season with a 2-1 loss at Louisiana.
Junior varsity opens 1-1

The junior varsity squad went to 1-1 with an 8-2 win over Mark Twain, Thursday.
Plunkett and Riley Sutter shared the pitching, holding the Lady Tigers to one earned run on three hits and a walk while striking out 10.
Norah Augspurg and Adyson Dorsey lead the team’s seven-hit attack with two hits each.
This week Palmyra was to host LaPlata, Tuesday, and Monroe City, Thursday, before hosting a cluster this Saturday.
State classification

State softball classifications were announced last week by MSHSAA, and the Lady Panthers have been placed in Class 3, District 3 along with Jennings, Lutheran St. Charles, Orchard Farm, St. Charles West, STEAM Academy at McCluer South-Berkeley, Winfield and Wright City.
