The PHS varsity softball team was hoping to pull off one more upset and advance to the state playoffs but fell to top-seeded Winfield, 8-4, in the Class 3, District 3 Tournament Championship game last Tuesday.

A day after destroying second-seeded Wright City, 24-10,  the Lady Panthers (9-16) scored the first three runs of the game against Winfield, with senior catcher Hailey Kroeger blasting a two-run home run in the third inning.

Winfield came back with eight runs–three in the third, four in the fourth and one in the fifth–while Palmyra managed just one late run that ended the Lady Panther season.

Winfield survived a scare in the third inning when the starting pitcher, Maci Knowles took a line drive off her midsection.

She was doubled over in pain for several moments, putting in question whether she would be able to continue. But she shook it off and proceeded to shut down the Lady Panthers striking out 13 including two of the last three Palmyra batters, to earn the complete-game win.

Winfield went on to defeat Hallsville, 7-5, in the Class 3 quarterfinals Saturday to advance to the state semifinals.

Winfield (20-11) will take on St. Francis Borgia (18-9-1) Friday in Springfield, while Oak Grove (25-6) will play Fatima

(33-4) in the other semifinal.

The winners will play for the championship Saturday in Springfield.

Palmyra scored four runs in the first and 11 in the second en route to their 24-10 win over Wright City, Tuesday.

Lexi Peuster and Alaina Loman each scored five times  in the game, with Arizona Mitchell earning the mound victory.
